AA has definitely hit the wall at SMW, but it's not as if this guy is a bum. He simply can't deal with the length of some of these fighters. But no one was saying these things about him before the Dirrell loss.

Come on. That's a silly comparison. Going in Wlad would have been the clear top dog. He has proved his worth in the division to the point that there isn't anyone left.

Bute, whether for or against, hasn't proved himself against the top of the division.

    Very fair. Time will tell.

Fine! Due to popular demand, I will amend my post:
Imagine they set up a heavyweight Super 6 tournament and they invite Povetkin, Fury, Helenius, Chisora, Ustinov and Seth Mitchell.
They beat up each other for a while, claiming to fight the best and then the winner says Vitaly Klitschko has to prove himself before he earns the right to face him.
All SMW Super6 fans are just as deluded.

    There. :good

Now, about your comment that he "hasn't proved himself against the top of the division."
He ALREADY WAS the top of the division. At least a third of the top. (Split with Forch and Kessler). Ward and Dirrell didn't prove themselves against the whole top of the division, since they didn't fight Bute. :deal

    :hi:

I'd compare the situation of Ward vs Bute with the Ward-Kessler fight.

What if Kessler said "I'm not entering a tournament with 2 greens like Dirrell and Ward, they need to fight better competition before having a shot at me, Kessler, who have been fighting the best SMW for a while now"?

He would have been waaaaaaay more entitled than Ward is to have said that. Sad that so-called boxing fans encourage these attitudes that get in the way of good match-ups.

Anyway, Ward is entitled to an easy defence so he can milk his titles, plus his hand is injured anyway, so none of this really matters, but the comment that Bute doesn't deserve to face him is incredibly, unbelievably stupid in any case.

I agree, but he didn't. What's funny is that people even have the audacity to say it took some balls to enter the tourney.

Yeah man I don't know what's going on.. (in fact, I already knew most ESB forumers were idiots before I came here the first time, but damn man, didn't think it was that worse!)

Of course, and most Bute fans think the same. Ward is entitled to his easy defense in Joakland, but at least be straight about it, cause now, dumb people start to have the same speech as Ward

In fact, now that I think about it, that's exactly what Ward wants to do. He knows he will fight Bute, but whether that happens now or later, it's all the same really. So why not put in some fights against some chumps, so he can get the lion's share of the purses for a bit.
He then makes comments about Bute needing to fight his way to him by going through Froch, but those comments are only meant to distract from the fact that he will be facing some no-hopers in his next fights and he needs to sell those fights somehow.
I don't begrudge him any of that. It's really just stupid fans who take those comments way too seriously and make a big thing of Bute "not being deserving enough".

I see you wrote pretty much the same thing while I was typing. :thumbsup

In any supersix style tournament that lasts over two years there is always going to be the possibilty that someone on the outside will clean up the rest (or near to) of the division whilst excluded from the tournament.

This is what has happened. Don't look at it as a bad thing though, it's a good thing, it means we have a legit challenger for Ward who has pretty much cleaned out the division. if Bute wasn't there he would only have a fight with Dirrell and after that (if he won) then there are unexciting rematches (being though he won pretty convincingly) or move weight (which i doubt he is considering at the minute).

You're right! But it's even worse, since the guy frozen on the outside was already so much higher then those in the tournament.
If, for example, Bute had been in (with his belt) and Dirrell (or Ward) out, the one left out might have cleaned up the rest like Bute did, but questions about his status would be more legitimate than present questions about Bute's status.

Whatever makes you feel better about things sport. Doesn't change anything.

There's Vitaly and Wlad....whatever order you like, and then there's everyone else....and by a wide margin.

Not so the case in the case of the SMW's.

Come up with a better hypothetical. It isn't working.

There are 3 guys who may have realistic claims to having a higher spot than Bute.

Whatever side of the argument you are on. They have ALL faced better comp in the last few years, or career-wise than Bute.

Ward proved himself against Kessler and Froch. Froch proved himself against Kessler and Ward. Kessler proved himself against Ward and Froch.

    Notice anything?

I'm not knocking Bute. I think he is uber talented. And it isn't his fault he wasn't invited to the tourney. However, I have no issues with Ward's take that Bute should go thru a little fire himself to get to the guy who has already done so and stands alone at the top.

    Frankly, **** Ward on this.

Bute is the only top contender he hasn't faced, its a very intriguing fight everyone really wants to see. Bute shut out Johnson, who was Froch's eliminator for the Finale.

If Ward came out and said he just wanted a break, I would have more respect.

I'm a boxing fan, I want to see the best matches made while the talent is there and willing. I've seen too much of this crap in the 90s.

We were talking about before the tournament. There was only one with realistic claims of having a higher spot than Bute, and that one was damaging his standing through inactivity.

Still bad comparison. VITALI can still say fought LENNOX LEWIS. Bute don't have anyone like that on his resume. Period. :hi:

He actually wasn't that much higher before the tornament. Kessler was more proven than Bute before the tornament. Bute was still looked at like a prospect which he still sort of is.

Yes because he was considered a major threat before the tornament. Bute doesn't get credit for hindsight.
