Why doesn't Martinez try and fight someone who:

    A) is good
    B) isn't a WW or a JWW

How does Macklin not meet these criteria?

Martinez seems to be doing everything in his power to not fight the best available middleweights right now. Macklin isn't Golovkin, or Pirog. Should be an easy fight for Martinez.

How on the basis of resume is Golovkin possibly better than Macklin? His best win is a life-and-death KO of a blown-up Ouma who wasn't exacty winning a lot of meaningful fights before they met. Beyond that Golovkin was locked in promoter hell until last month and hasn't even once sought a fight with Martinez.

You made that up. HBO was fine with Pirog is Martinez would take the fight. At no point did Martinez entertain the idea.

Matthew is rated top 3 by Ring magazine. Daniel Geale (#1) and Felix Sturm (#2) both were offered the fight, but they refused. Matthew would probably be the WBA champ and rated #1 had he not been robbed in the Sturm fight.

It's ridiculous how people act as if there's only Martinez and Pirog in the middleweight division. What the hell has Pirog done? He beat a ****ing untested prospect. There's zero evidence so far that shows he's a top fighter until he fights a decent contender. As for Golovkin, he hasn't done anything in his pro career either, but it's not his fault because hasn't been allowed to fight in the US due to contract issues.

They didn't want Pirog in March (when Martinez had absolutely no say in his opponent choice) and they coudn't have afforded him in October. I don't see why the onus is on Martinez to fight a guy who has no traction in the US thanks in part to his own decisions, who cannot meaningfully contribute to the promotion in any way, whose belt rightfully belongs to Martinez anyway, and who has never even defeated a top 10 middleweight.

I didn't even say the onus is on Sergio to fight him. But I'm also skeptical regarding both of your claims:

    1. Where did you get this, both that HBO didn't want him in March and that Sergio had no say? It's a mighty coincidence that HBO chose another LDB fighter in Macklin, one who's a total unknown in the US.

    2. Please provide a link that October didn't happen due Pirog's money demands, first time I heard of this. I doubt he even commands a much higher purse than Barker, despite the belt

Was referring to last March when Martinez was told to fight Dzinziruk or walk. If Martinez fights Macklin, this will mark only the second time he's had any real discretion over his opponent in the US

I don't have a link, but that was my own guess due to the fact that HBO had blown through its entire budget. I wasn't implying that it was seriously negotiated, only that the opponent had to come cheap. Barker made less than $400000 against Martinez and I don't see Pirog taking that little for a unification fight, particularly since he's demonstrated that he'd turn down a fight in the US for monetary reasons and since Dzinziruk, who he shares a promoter with, had just made $850,000 in March.

More to the point though, HBO has demonstrated not one bit of interest in having Pirog in any context. Gabriel Montoya has said that Kery Davis had no interest in him or a Martinez-Pirog fight when the issue was brought up, both before the Barker bout (http://www.maxboxing.com/news/promo-lead/montoyas-monday-mailbag--mar-14-2011) and after (http://forums.doghouseboxing.com/index.php?showtopic=166329&st=144&p=3730420&#entry3730420)
