My recollection is different: Team Sergio had submitted a list of opponents to HBO that didn't include Pirog (after dismissing him in the press), and Dz was the only one acceptable to both sides.

One more contentious claim, I doubt have a link for that. The only rumor I'm aware of was an FNF date with Manfredo. Even if true, rejecting $15k on ESPN is nothing like $400k for a date with the Champ on HBO. As far as I can remember, he made not more than $75k for Jacobs.

Maybe it's true that HBO is not interested in Pirog, but it's not that case that "Martinez was gonna fight pirog, hbo didn't agree". They did veto Zbik, it never came to that with Pirog.

Dzinziruk wasn't on that list in the first place though, and only became included through HBO's ludicrous deal with Shaw for Bradley-Alexander. The timeline was: Martinez and HBO want to make a Cotto fight -> Arum says no -> Martinez wants to fight his mandatory Zbik -> HBO turns that fight down -> HBO approves Lee -> HBO turns down Lee -> HBO tells Martinez to fight Dzinziruk or walk.

There were articles where Lewkowicz or DiBella said something like "It's a matter of Zbik, Lee, or Dzinziruk and it's up to HBO now," but those only appeared after HBO had turned down Zbik and reneged on the Lee deal. Dzinziruk only became a possible opponent at all through the network's intervention, and only became the opponent through their ultimatum.

And to revise an earlier statement, Martinez didn't even have complete say in the Barker fight, as HBO demanded they go back to Geale after he'd turned them down and offer him a bigger slice of the purse before they'd approve Barker. This of course could also be seen as further circumstantial evidence that the network is not interested in Pirog as they didn't even insist DiBella negotiate with him once.

I don't believe I ever said anything like that however and was merely providing evidence that the network was also not interested in Pirog. You're the one who's asserted that HBO was fine with him, something I've not seen any links for either.

 

I'd like to see Martinez fight Lara myself.

 

Thanks for the link. So he'd take anything on HBO or SHO, but he's getting no traction there, and traveling to the US to fight on FNF makes no financial sense. That's what I said above.

That's what the guy I was responding to said. You don't have to convince me HBO is not interested in featuring Pirog, but I doubt they'd straight veto him if Sergio or Chavez wanted to fight him.

 

Macklin is a better fighter though, Macklin vs Barker would be great

It doesn't say he refused a reasonable offer either, it says the only thing on the table was FNF. He wouldn't have to take just anything to appear on a premium network, these guys pay at least 10-20 times more than FNF.

 

I agree hes a better fighter but if hes gonna fight with Martinez he'll just get KO'ed, its not like Macklin has 1 punch power to KO Martinez.

 

Lmao @ Dummies here bashing Martinez for fighting Mackin. The same Macklin that was robbed vs Sturm in which Pirog didnt beat any fighters in Sturm's level.
