Its 50-50 IMO. Martinez has never fought anyone with good boxing skills and he was troubled by someone who had the basic fundamentals last fight. PW technically beat him and PW isnt the best boxer, Pavlik is an alcoholic and Bernard dominated a younger version of him much better than Martinez did. Kermit got a draw...robbery or not, why was the fight even competitive? To be honest I dont see why Martinez is rated so high, he hasn't really done anything special.
i really think cottos boxing skills will him and if that cause martinez to chase cotto i think he would pick him off with his jabs just hope he doesnt run out of gas
OK gents, cheers, some interesting opinions there. You think he has a better chance than, say Proksa? Do you think he should vault into the MW rankings in a type of superfight situation, I mean, or would you rather see him in there with a valid top 5 type at MW?
The styles don't match up in Cotto's favor.. I honestly would give a Cotto a better chance with Floyd.
I dont think that sergio walks around in the 180s that is exaggerating it a bit Barker did trouble sergio but you have to look at how he did it, he used a good high guard that martinez had trouble landing through. There is also the chance that martinez underestimated him because he is always talking about pac or floyd or whoever and nobody knew who barker was. Cotto doesnt have good enough defense to beat sergio and sergio is much bigger than him, I dont see any way that cotto could beat him. Also if that fight did get made expect to see sergio in top form. Cotto cant outbox sergio and he cant get inside and rough him up with body shots because sergio is stronger
I'd give Cotto a chance because Martinez isn't that much bigger, he fights with low hands without the quickest reactions, he gives up his height too and he's nearly 38 now. Cotto is better technically and the style sort of suits him. It would be and interesting fight but wouldn't happen ever, even if Martinez signs to TR
No. way. A top five guy would be a better match, definitely. Maybe not for Sergio though, because none of these guys would give him the kind of money he'd get with Cotto. None.
I think Martinez is too fast, and too powerfull. Cotto may do well early but I think Martinez would break through and stop him inside 10 rounds.
Best post in the thread PP. I'm not sure how anyone is coming to the conclusion that Martinez is a stylistic nightmare for Cotto!?! Cotto seems to have struggled more with pressurising volume punchers which I wouldn't consider Martinez to be at all. Cotto has better boxing fundementals then Martinez IMO. If it becomes a technical affair, Cotto can win a decision. Martinez will probably take the lead with punching in this fight, figuring he's the bigger man...this could suit Cotto. I would love to see this.
