Merry Christmas GP, you got any fights coming up? I got this HW boxed set thing this morning so I'm mad into HW's just now. Watching it as we speak, Louis-Charles for the second time today. I love Christmas, me.

What makes them stand out so much for you, these fights?

I don't know what version I have linked there, but in the version I watched today a couple of the ring photographers were giving Louis a really hard time. "Work the other side of the ring, Joe!" "Joe Louis, get out of the way!" All that sort of stuff, really pissed me actually.

How about the ovation he got here though? Louder than Quarry's.

    Merry Christmas yourself.

Nah, no fights. Had a busy season so far like 7 or 8 fights since October, won them all but 2 and avenged one, so no bad.

There just brutal fights arnt they? Both guys giving it their all. I actually watched Chacon vs Limon IV today (as I do every christmas) and Chacon is just so determined in it, Frazier is like that in these two fights IMO.

Not noticed that about the photographers before.

Those yells at Joe actually came from Angelo Dundee at his broadcast position. Being an experienced commentator, I think he was concerned about Louis blocking the action from the television audience. Joe was also an experienced television commentator, but wasn't adept at working the cameras while simultaneously refereeing a bout. Fortunately, Louis did not block out the knockdown punch from the main camera.

Was it really? That's a great detail, may I ask how you came by it? Louis wasn't really blocking anything IMO. Dundee shouldn't have used that tone.

As a referee though...not great shakes. He tries to wave them in before they're introduced...

the Ring article covering the fight was pretty good. The writer said Joe was better than the Frazier of the first Ali fight. Maybe he was just trying to build up demand for a third (that's what writers do)

Joe looked good here but looked flat in the Ellis fight a few months later

Frazier may have been the best small heavyweight ever outside of Dempsey, Marciano

I thought it was pretty self-evident, really.
That's the same voice heard screaming from the corner of Tillis when Angie was trying to salvage Quick from losing to Pinklon Thomas (yet James kept getting hit by left, after left, after left, getting more and more punch drunk by the second). The reason those yells were heard so loudly and clearly on the Frazier-JQ II footage is simply because Dundee was on a telecast microphone. (It may not have been that loud to the live MSG audience.)

Joe might have been blocking the action from the broadcast position also, eliciting Dundee's calls to work the other side of the ring. As far as the tone goes, he needed to call loudly enough so Joe would hear him.
And the moment Jerry turned away after Smoke's long right tore open that cut over JQ's left eye, Louis should have called a halt then and there. Angelo's call to "Stop it, Joe!" was wholly merited in that situation. (Is there any question that it's Dundee yelling over his microphone to Louis in that instance, with the accompanying audio distortion?)

The Bomber didn't quite kowtow to Dundee as JJW did to Nat Fleischer in Lewiston. Certainly he seemed affected by the harassment from ringside, but he gave Jerry every chance to continue after it was no longer competitive, and this was the only stoppage JQ did not protest.

I admit, Louis looked older than his age 60, as well as senile and slowed, but he did okay refereeing this fight in '74....... Louis gave Quarry every chance in the book to pull through before halting the show in round 7......

TREMENDOUS fight - and certainly Frazier's best "post-peak" performance by far.

Ironically, Quarry actually fought this fight the way most people thought he should've fought the first one - moving and counterpunching, instead of colliding in mid ring - and yet he fared even worse here than he had in the first fight.

For his part, Frazier appeared to be hitting harder than he had at any other stage of his career, especially with his right hand - honestly, he looked like he was trying to tear Quarry's head off with every punch he threw. That left hook to the head that started Quarry on his decline in the 4th round is one of the best left hooks I've ever seen. :admin:yikes
