Physically powerful but light punching fighters?

Why do i think of Ken Norton?:think

 

Jack Johnson: only because his style was that of a boxer.

Buster Mathis: superheavyweight stats, light punch.

 

I have no idea. He was physically powerful, but hardly light punching.

Watching his bouts I got the impression he packed a bit of wallop-especially in his left hook (also had a sneaky right). He crumbled Gonzalez & Spider Webb, chopped down Fernandez, and battered around the Hurricane like a pinball machine (much to my delight).

He had the kind of power you had to respect, which even forced the likes of Fullmer to go into "boxing" mode. Only other fighter that made him do that was Lausse from what I've seen on film (Tiger vs Lausse would've been a barn burner).

His KO tally is a tad misleading in regards to his power IMHO. He didn't have dynamite in his fists, but he didn't hit like Antuofermo/Hamsho either.

 

Carlos Baldomier was the first guy I thought of. Big, strong WW but couldnt crack an egg. The stoppage over Gatti had my jaw on the floor.

Any heavyweight, by definition, can hit.

Buster's bread-and-butter was his speed and boxing skills.

He knocked out a lot of stiffs.

Once he stepped up, it was certainly not his power he relied on, even though he was always the bigger man.

I guess if Ali, who kayoed George Foreman, and Jack Johnson, who stopped Big Jeff, belong in this thread, Buster--if only on size alone--does too.

 

Tiger could definitely punch. In fact I'd go so far as to call him a legitimately hard puncher.

Seeing as he stunned Chuvalo and Frazier I think he wasn't really a soft puncher. A guy I would consider a light hitter from that era would be Joe Bugner.

 

Yes. In fact, I've read a stunning right hand from Buster sealed the decision win for him over Frazier in the amateurs.

And he improved his power under the tutelage of Cus D'Amato, I guess proving D'Amato's dictum that a puncher is made, not born.

Again, any heavyweight worth his salt should be able to crack an average Joe to lala land and, in competition, can always land that game changer at any time.

Bugner is a good example; he was physically impressive and even looked dangerous the few times he decided to throw with mean intentions.

 

I hoped not 2c this but at least it wasn't 1 of d 1st mentions .
1 doesn't floor Tyson , Bowe , Mercer , Cooper and also Douglas , Moorer and then others as well if he isn't a well above d average puncher . Holyfield not being a big puncher is a bad myth , even if he wasn't a huge puncher .

Fullmer also went in2 a "boxing" mode vs Basilio and who knows how many others as well .

 

I don't see how you can include Fenech here, he was a fighter that hurt you with every punch in that classic swarmer mauler style, no he is not a light puncher in any sense of the word.
