Anyone know what the story is with Coleman Barrett I was talking to him the night of his last fight in October last year and he was saying he had a fight 2 weeks later.Since then nothing a bit of chat about him and Rogan for the Irish title but nothing since.

Very very sad!! Not only was he around the same age and weight as DOJ and JJJ, he overshadowed them most of the time....winning all irelands by far greater margins!! He was walking thru all irelands at the age of 14/15/16. Beating lads 12 and 13 nil and very often winning by the 15 point rule.
    R.I.P. to the poor fella!!

    Boxing: McDonagh takes National title

WE HAD John Paul McDonagh and Craig McCarthy boxing last weekend. John Paul boxing in the National Junior/U18 Championships at the National Stadium, Dublin and Craig boxing for the Irish Cadets against Italy in Venice.

John Paul (57kgs) was outstanding in beating David Oliver Joyce (St. Michael’s, Athy) in the national final on Friday night last. This was John Paul’s second national title in as many months. John Paul won the Youth 2 title in April and became the first boxer from St. Paul’s to win two national titles in the one season.

John Paul and Joyce had boxed a number of times during the last few seasons and all the results were very close. Joyce being a year older than John Paul had gained a lot more experience boxing the championship’s four two minute rounds. Joyce had boxed in last year’s national seniors and was the gold medallist at the Senior Four Nations Tournament between Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales in Scotland in April.

John Paul’s only experience of four rounds was in the semi-final the previous weekend. The first round was tight with each boxer giving little away; John Paul shaded the first 3 – 2. John Paul began to find his range during the second and picked off Joyce with some beautiful counter punches to win the round 4 – 1 and take a 7 – 3 lead going in to the third. It was during the third round that John Paul’s class and superior boxing skills started to shine through. John Paul was catching Joyce with superb punches that he struggled to cope with.

John Paul had won the third round 7 – 0 and stretched his over all lead to 14 – 3. John Paul was now in control and coasted through the last round keeping out of trouble and scoring at will. When the final score of 22 – 7 was announced John Paul, his coach Seamus Cowman and all his supporters were jubilant.

Afterwards National High Performance Director Gary Keegan had great praise for John Paul, citing how John Paul stood head and shoulders above all the other boxers on show that night. John Paul has now been selected to join the National High Performance Team.

The undercard of Carlos' fight on the 28th of jan looks good so far but there is a lad John Ryder looks to be the chief support at Middleweight 8-0(5) Would be great if Fitz or Spike would step up here and give us a greater Irish interest in the card.Fitz is complaining about lack of fights he should get onto this if he can,Timms is on in finland the week before so Pascals focus should be on that and not spike so maybe he woudnt be right.Still high profile for the two lads if avaliable and willing.

I think Willie was looking past Mc Carthy who used the old scoring system very well and won fair and square,I felt jjj was unlucky against Barbazon at 69 though some dubious reffing in that one,I wonder will our three qualified boxers enter this year,If it was me i wouldnt id enjoy the xmas break before 7 months of tough training.
