Ward: Bute needs to beat 1 or 2 A-level guys & come out of his hometown to get a shot

It's definitely not the black & white as you depict in the US.

For example, I bet you if Pacquiao-Mayweather ever happens, more than 50% of the casual fans out there would definitely be rooting for Pacquiao.

It has more to do with image than geography when you're just speaking about the "US".

You have no concept of fighting at home obviously.

Distance don't mean ****. Residing population, employees, crowds altogether, do.

Are you telling me the S6 final was an 'away' fight for Ward and a 'home' fight for Froch?

Dude, GTFOH is that's what you meant. Ward fought all his meaningful fights in Cali, except for one -still in the US- in which his opponent was from the ****in UK.

    Not very hard to understand.

Bute IS being hyped up. However, in comparison with David Lemieux who basically only had good punching power & decent fundamentals, Bute has a lot to him. Can you imagine if Éric Lucas ever had KO power in his right hand?

In Québec they (can't say 'we' anymore) love to love, they love to hate. It's black or white. I just see more substance in Bute's game than most who have tried their luck on the world scene fighting out of QC.

Point is, Gatti's career didn't unfold the way Bute's is going. 2012 is make or break for Bute, it's time to put up or shut up. The way Larouche developed him, the way Bute trains religiously for fights, all looks more promising to me than -as you pointed out- what happened to Gatti.

I think you mean the die hard or hardcore fans of boxing.

What will the casual do when they will see the guy with the US flag on his trunk and beside him during the anthem vs the filipinos or any other? Plus your talking about Pac that is a superstar of the sport in himself. For example, I guess that a lot of US MMA fans are cheering for GSP when he fights, but that is the exception, not the rules.

I think Bute is a pretty talented guy. He reminds me of Kessler in that he has a limited range of what he can do, but he's quite good within that range that typically works against higher end foes who are not quite elite. He's a tremendous body puncher, and he has decent speed and power.

If he fights Ward next week, Bute will be at a huge advantage as Ward has a broken hand.

In a more general sense, if they fought "next" with proper preparation, I favor Ward but wide UD or late round stoppage. Something in he ballpark of 117-111/118-110.

    Maybe that's because Mayweather's an *******.

Had Lewis been American fighting Vitali in Las Vegas, you think over 50% of the fans out there would have been cheering for Klitschko??

Well, Floyd and Pac are two of the biggest stars in boxing, and in my experience with US casual fans, many of them have great admiration for Pacquiao whereas they absolutely despise Floyd!

There's a textbook high profile example that illustrates the error in your way.

Beyond that, it still has to do with image I say more than anything.

I often watch fights with different groups of "casual fans" and I have NEVER seen a trend of people going, "Which one is the American fighter--I'm rooting for him!"

Casual fans really don't give a **** about that (except maybe more so when it comes to the heavyweight division!!), they just want to see entertaining scraps.

Now if you're from NYC and you see a New York prospect coming up, you might root for the local guy. But it's unlikely you would see a casual fan in NYC give a **** about some prospect from Boston, Chicago, LA, etc.

Since I dont come from america, I cant really argue with you. But I always thought that USA was a very patriotic country and being so would (again, in majority) cheer the US guys coming from the west coast than the Bloke coming from the other side of the pond.

Believe me here in Canada there's big difference between the french and the english side of the country, very big, but if a fellow canadian is competing against somebody outside canada, usually we (the french) will cheer for the canadian guy nonetheless.

Agree. It's a simplistic view of the US. If you a fight a Mexican fighter in texas, the mexican fighter will get MORE fans than the US fighter, UNLESS the US fighter is from Texas. Not California, not Montana, not New York.

You ask anyone from New Jersey if they thought Wards fight was a hometown fight and they would say no.

Which is why I would not consider Bute fighting in lets, say, Vancouver, a hometown fight for him, unlike Drozzy.

I understand cultural and regional differences. Distance matters ALMOST as much too.

In any case, Bute called Ward's bluff and already said he is willing to go to Oakland. And I dont mind Ward folding his hand, I mind people trying to tell us that a no 1 vs no 2 unification fights is not good for now...

People are saying that Bute is cherry picking, but when he want the big fight in the other man backyard, he should just aim lower...

I'd say it's almost neutral really.

You can say that Ward had a slight advantage with some American fans because he was from the US, but I would not be surprised if there were Americans rooting for Froch for various different reasons.

I don't view that as a "home fight" for either fighter, really.

Bute only looks good against medicore fighters. yes he looks to be quick, and looks to have a good body attack, and looks good in taking a punch, all against medicore fighters. I said this last week, theer wasa kid from montreal named Hercules, was supposed to be the next bigf thing KOing everyone in his path, but when he stepped up to HBo, his ass was knocked royally. See my point, these guys heer from canada aren't ready or at least from Montreal
