Having read another thread on here, with people slating Calzaghe. I went back and re-watched a number of his fights, in particular the Hopkins bout. My scorecard has it 114-113 for Hopkins in a close fight. I felt that Hopkins controlled the pace, and fought his fight. Calzaghe won a number of rounds purely on effort and work rate. Close fight, but props to both guys. Stop hating.
I lost alot of respect for Hopkins that night, all the holding and dirty tactics then claiming the low blow was just a ***** move, the facts are Hopkins needed a blow he was ****ed.. I had Calzaghe winning that no problems...
In hindsight it is known that Hopkins had a medical issue which can effect cardio. He gassed about half way through, which even for an old Hopkins is uncharacteristic. Still I had him winning 115-112. He didn't do any favors to himself with the "whiteboy" comment prior to the fight. Also, HBO was trying to use Calzaghe as a money/house fighter at the time, so Hopkins had an uphill battle. That along with him having an off night cardiowise. Reviewing the fight, Calzaghe didn't land more than 50 punches. It is just another one of those fights that shows how corrupt compubox is as well as HBO commentary.
I had Calzaghe winning just as comfortably as Ward beat Froch. Hopkins lost virtually every round after the first couple
Both fighters made each other look **** dont mean they themselves were at that level. Hopkins at post 40 will always have difficulty vs a volume puncher, and Calzaghe always had difficulty vs counter punchers.
At the time of the fight not many people were saying hopkins won or it was a robbery, Calzaghe was just getting criticised for fighting someone old, but since hopkins proved over the next couple of years he was still one of the P4P best the criticism of calzaghe changed to it being a robbery.
