Less than half a million. Five gets two million for Fury and he's a bag of utter ****. Sky has been a disaster for the sport from minute one, unless you're called Frank. Short-term profit at the expense of long-term sustainability.
You come across more like someone who is obsessed/has an agenda than someone who feels they aren't getting value for money at less than £1 per show.
When those bunch, excepting Haye and Hatton, were on Sky, they regularly got less than a million viewers. Simple economics. Bruno, Benn, Eubank and Hamed were all prominent ITV or BBC stars before Frank took big money from Sky, moved them over, and effectively ended terrestrial coverage of the sport. That signalled its exit from the mainstream. Even Frank admits it. Sky bought those rights because it saw it as a way to encourage subscribers. Fighters built on Sky are minor celebrities compared to fighters in ITV and BBC in the sport's commercial prime in the UK. Calzaghe didn't get the big paydays and star billing until he appeared on ITV one fight before he met Lacy. That made him famous, before then barely any casual fans knew who he was. I'll give you Hatton but he's not a patch on Eubank, Bruno or Benn. Haye? Come on - he was a minor celebrity until he moved to HW. Sky didn't build him, he knew how to market himself with the right opponent. Your last point sums it all up - Sky restricts the number of people who can see you. Hatton-Mayweather got over 1million views. Imagine if that had been on ITV... Sky is bad for boxing's long-term health. You can't deny it. The facts are clear.
Mitchell vs Ormond is an okay fight BUT the right to fight Burns is an absolute joke. I'll keep saying it but Burns is a world class fighter and not one domestic fighter has earned the right to fight for a championship.
dftaylor has a point. boxing in terms of popularity is not much healthier on sky when viewing figures at a max are quarter of mil.
In the same way Cleverly will eventually make a BS defence against Enzo and another against Bellew who is also undeserving of a world title fight but deserves the rematch.
Ive got it but dont hold much hope of it lasting.I hope Im wrong. Not happy about that pay wizard thing when you subscribe.****ish name and a lot of ****ing about I found it annoying.
Mitchell-Ormond is a horrible fight. Ormond is a basically a novice he has faced one tough opponent in Mickey Coveney, he has done one 8 rounder and hasn't even been that active for a prospect he has had 3 fights in the last year. IMHO he doesn't even have enough experience to get a British or Commonwealth title shot (I know he is Irish but I am using those titles as a baramater of where his career is placed at the moment) let alone take on an experienced top 10 Lightweight like Kevin Mitchell for the right to fight for a world title (although if he were to win I would have no complaints over him getting a shot at the title). I have to ask why on earth are they making this fight, the only person who can possibly win from this is Ormond he has nothing to lose, a win for Kev adds absolutely no credibilty to him and if anything other than a ablitoration will look bad on him and any subsequent fight with Ricky Burns. Simply put horrible match making and a very cheap fight for FW to put together.
That was a good fight to make but even that was a major step up for Ormond consedering the level of oppo he has faced so far in his career but that was a reasonable step up, Johansson is a career Super Featherweight who is beginning to get on a bit and has been a bit inactive of late.
Matthews will almost certainly get a fight with Ricky Burns in the fall in a so called world title unification bout.
I'm going to be honest I haven't seen Ormond so he may be very good for all I know, but from looking at what he has achieved in his professional career thus far it would suggest that this is a huge step up for him, and far more often that not when a fighter steps up a couple of levels from what they have faced they are found out fairly easily and are thrown back to the level they were fighting at before with their confidence ripped from them. I'm sorry but regardless of how talented Ormond is this fight should not be happening, he has done nothing in his career to this point that is worth taking note of and demands any attention, he needs to go through the ranks as all fighters should, take on some gatekeepers, fight for domestic and continental titles. Seriously you tell me what does Kevin Mitchell or anyone other than Stephen Ormond stand to gain from this fight?
