JOE BENJAMIN was a pro lightweight who had 92 fights winning 46 and losing 21, he fought men like Richie Mitchell,,Johnny Dundee,and drew with Joe Rivers and beat Benny Valger.
He was a regular sparring partner for Dempsey ,who used him for speed work.atsch

I'm sure if you look back on McVey's posts you'll see that he is also a quite knowledgeble and respectable poster, im sure he's taken your posts opposite to what was intended. Given some of the posters with an agenda recently, i feel he may have mistaken you for one.

On the flip side... McVey take a look at the history of ecto's posts. Very knowledgable, insightfull and honest, there is no buttering up in his opinion, he talks facts.

none of the stories here say anything much to me about dempsey being any sort of particular nasty character.
ok he lived in a brothel for a while and probably lived largely off his wife's "immoral earnings" for a while.
its no secret that dempsey came from the desperately poor margins of society. so what ?

as for bring "sadistic" in training camp, again, its hardly surprising. Dempsey had a cruel mean streak for sure, like most great fighters, and training camp was no place to repress that streak. These allegations concern him bullying grown men who happen to fancy themselves as boxers of some description. Spare me the violins and sobbing.

none of this excludes the fact that he could be a "gentleman" in civilian life and in retirement.

 

All of our boxing heroes,such as Dempsey,Johnson,Ali,Frazier,Tyson et al,are human beings,like the rest of us. Not saints,and we should n't expect them to be.
