I know quite a few members of this forum rely on the opinions of a fighters peers and the opinions of fighters on how the fighters from their time would match up against 'new fighters'.

Is this defensible though? Jess Willard would beat Ali? It's kind of pointing out how bias really can affect things, and that these experts that people like to quote are, after all, human and are also prone to being swayed by emotions when passing comments.

Also just an interesting read I think.

Pretty much bang on about Frazier-Ali.

But yeah, generational bias is a pain. I was reading an old interview with Elbows McFadden and he's being asked about how the fighters of the day (Benny Leonard was champion at that time) would do against Gans. George picked Gans to beat them all. When he was asked how often he'd seen Benny Leonard fight, he quite happily admitted to not having watched any boxing since his retirement.

You are a very VERY VERY sad bearfacedpig - you seriously need to get a life and the people looking after this forum would do well to get rid of you for good in my book - and you can take that as coming from the primary source of one of your peers

I'm enjoying having time off work, and going through the wonders of google news. I've spent all night reading old newspapers. It's really, really fun.

It was a dodgy statement from Gene, aye. He was scarily accurate on Frazier, Ali. I get where he's coming from when he talks about facing Ali too. It's like reading how Norton beat him.

Look in the favourite fighter from each division thread. And look at Janitor's list. i wonder how much fight footage available there is in total for all of those guys. Probably not even a short career's worth.

His opinions are based entirely on articles, and has a clear bias toward the era's he has researched. The thing about placing your entire viewpoint on literature, is that poetic license is always taken. And you will find every notable fighter in history being credited as one of the toughest, one of the fastest, one of the best technicians etc..in one article or another

You'll never see him using footage as evidence, because the footage of those era's takes a giant, stinking **** on his argument.

FWIW, I think Janitor is a great poster and I value his opinions.

As for myself, I've tried dipping in that pool and have come to admire the lot of ATGs who defined it but ultimately come out unsatisfied with little, if any quality footage to enjoy. It's a little nervewrecking to read about A or B's abilities, their quality of opposition and the wars they had in the ring, but then being left to visualize. It's no small task for me to discuss these cats without really knowing how good they were, much less the contenders and top tier champions they took out. It isn't very long before I find myself with my feet comfortably planted back in my 1970s-80s comfort zone.

I should've said this also, as it looks like an attack...

I also think Janitor is a great poster, vast amounts of knowledge, always a gentleman and clearly a very intelligent man.

But his stance is flawed and one of the clearest cases of era bias on the forum

Funny how some talk about 'bias' on this forum when the usual suspects ACTUALLY PUT UP A SERIES OF THREADS IN A 'BIAS' DIRECTLY AGAINSTCERTAIN FIGHTERS (VERY VERY THINLY VEILED I MIGHT ADD)
