Every boxing fan/expert has an opinion about who the best is both currently and all time. This is my current Pound for Pound rankings. 1. Floyd Mayweather. With his recent 3 month jail term coming up his stock is likely to drop as it looks like he won't be fighting May 5th. For now Mayweather who is far and away the best boxer in the sport holds this spot. Before you go complaining that he only fights tune up fights anyone other than Sergio Martinez who is two weight classes above him, and the overrated Manny Pacquiao would be considered a tune up for Mayweather. 2. Andre Ward: It is easy to get excited when a boxer has a big win. Maybe this is the case. However the super 6 winner has beaten some very good boxers and shown his versitaly in doing so. If this was not my first list Ward would be making a huge jump. 3. Manny Pacquiao: He's the most overrated boxer right now. Pacquiao goes out of his way to fight the biggest name who poses the least risk. More so than anyone else. This plan almost did him in against Marquez who he would not have fought at 144 if he did not strugle against Mayweather. 4. Juan Manuel Marquez: A better boxer than Pacquiao. However, other than blantant roberies I go with the official result in my rankings. Despite the fact that I scored the fight to Marquez clearly in round by round scoring 10-2 at least 6 of them were very close. 5. Nonito Donaire: A great and rising talent. Donaire along with Ward are poised to be the next guys to claim the #1 spot when Mayweather, Pacquiao and Marquez calls it a day. Like Ward he's beating quility oppoents in clear fahsion. 6. Sergio Martinez: If this was not my first list here Martinez would have been taken a drop here. This is not to slight Martinez. However, The 5 boxers above him have done better in their most recent bouts. 7. Timothy Bradly: I don't think he is going to be as good at 147 and up that he has been at 140. At 140 he has put together a great resume at 140. 8. Yuriorkis Gamboa: The Cuban amature great is starting to live up to his hype. He has flaws but he's getting better. Also putting together a great resume of his own. 9. Lucian Bute: Bute is here more for what he can do in a boxing ring than what he's done. He might rank higher if he was part of the super 6. Which seemed to take up the best boxers at 168. 10. Bernard Hopkins: Had the orangal of his bout with Chad Dawson stood (ko2 Dawson) Dawson would be here. Hopkins knows and uses every trick in the book. Rather he's 46, 36 or 26 he's beating very good boxers. This is my Top 10 Pound for Pound list as the year 2011 comes to an end and 2012 is about to begin.
I don't see how Marquez beating Pacquiao on people's cards automatically bumps up Floyd. You become #1 by beating the #1, not sometime earlier beating the man who beat the #1. If people had Marquez winning on their card, it makes no sense to place Floyd above him.
This is a silly standard to hold for P4P lists given the fact that we're often talking about guys from completely different divisions and weight classes. It's perfectly acceptable to drop guys from the top spot if they haven't performed the best or if one had them losing, even if it means the next occupant of that position hasn't fought that particular person.
You get the P4P #1 spot by being the P4P #1 fighter in the world. You don't have to beat the P4P #1 fighter. What if Manny was still a Flyweight? Would Floyd have to beat him then? What if Wlad was the #1 P4P fighter in the world? Would Floyd have to move up to heavyweight to claim the spot? No, you get the spot by being the best fighter. Obviously, in the OP's opinion, Floyd is the P4P #1 fighter in the world. Simple as that.
1. Floyd Mayweather 2. Andre Ward 3. Juan Manuel Marquez 4. Manny Pacquiao 5. Nonito Donaire 6. Sergio Martinez 7. Timothy Bradley 8. Lamont Peterson 9. Yuriorkis gamboa 10. Amir Khan
