Oh sounds interesting as Marcel wasnt a devastating puncher or finisher, only aspect of the game he lacked.

I reckon it could go either way. One of the best fights of all time.

Paulie Ayala vs Johnny tapia, excellent fight with sustained action, poor decision though. I had it 115-113 for tapia.

I was going to watch romero vs tapia on Youtube, but the sound is so out of sync I cant be bothered:-(

i wouldn't mind seeing the Romeo fight, IIRC, it was a big grudge match at the time and was a week after Tyson Holyfield, and there was armed police patroling the Vegas:yep

I think Gomez was one of those latin american fighters of that early 70s period who were totally lacking in dedication and more interested in partying than training once they picked up a world title and made some money.I've spoke to fellow venezuelan and old CBZ site runner Mike Delisa about him before and that was the impression i got.

Without checking his record to be sure, i think he'd lost and had a couple of controversial non-title fights just before the Marcel losses.

Aye, I heard that, over 10000 people were at the fight, a great number for a 115 pound bout. there was some amount of tension in the air from the little of the fight ive seen aswell. romero's dad trained both boxers a some point and Johnny split from him in less than friendly terms iirc. reminds of me of the rios-Ortiz feud a little actually:D

Cheers, and that's plausible, although Marcel was so dominant I don't know how he'd get on at his absolute optimum (if that wasn't it)

Against Saijo he looked very sharp and well-schooled. And that man could be buzzed but he was hard to put away, and Gomez was clinical, lovely counter to start the downfall as well.
