Chris John - won the WBA title in 2003. Never unified but elevated to Super Champion in 2009

Gamboa - won WBA interim belt in 2009, and ordinary belt 6 months later. 2010 picked up the vacant IBF belt, and in his next fight picked up the vacant IBF belt for a 2nd time. Elevated to Super Champion in 2010 (John & Gamboa both Super Champs). Gamboa since vacated.

Caballero - WBA Champ since October 2011

Orlando Salido - WBO Champ since April 2011

Jhonny Gonzalez - WBC Champion since August 2011

Robinson Castellanos - WBC Silver belt holder since February 2011

We can easily ignore Castellanos as a bogus belt, but the others can all be construed as legit. The WBA belt is truly bizzare. Presumably John was a pain by keeping on defending outside the USA with Gamboa ready to take over the mantle. Therefore John was elevated to Super Champion to enable Gamboa to fight for the WBA. When Gamboa unified he then become the 2nd Super Champ. When he vacated it was Cabellero's turn for the ordinary belt.

Well at the weight we have the number 1 guy: gamboa who was a unified regular wba + ibf champ. We have john who won the super wba title on a bogus decision. We have wbo champ salido and wbc champ caballero.

I believe dib picked up the vacated ibf belt.

If john and gamboa fight it will be for the wba and ring title. The winner would be the clear front runner of the division.

If gamboa moves up i'd like to see caballero against salido.

Ultimately the belts are completely fractured but the divisional picture is pretty clear.

Gamboa is evidently the best in the division.

Does it really matter? I can't really remember but I think John was "champion in recess" for a while so Gamboa could unify, then the IBF stripped him, so the WBA stripped him as well because he wasn't a unified titlist any more, leaving John as their only champion since he became active again.

Oh, and somewhere in that mess they created a regular champion as well which Caballero won from Barrios.

  10. Me too. its all a load of bull ****. As long as decent fights are made I dont give a **** what belts they are for. I care more for the prizefighter trophy tbh.

Gamboa was technically "unified" champion (as listed on the WBA website) and not "Super" champion

I thought if you unified the WBA promoted you to 'Super' champion  Abysmal, eh?

  14. If you complete ten defences you are upgraded to ''Super Champion'', so they can then proclaim a ''regular champion'' who isn't usually permitted to unify.

Of course if the fighter generates a few quid those rules change, so they called Gamboa ''unified WBA champion'' and then let someone else fight for the ''regular'' title.

Like Bob Mee said on Ringside, I'm not sure what's super or regular about being a world champion, it's supposed to be the pinnacle of any sport, not the size of your fast food ffs.

The problem is that fighters will readily trade in their credibility as any kind of belt helps to sell them more tickets, the 3% (or whatever it is) sanctioning fee is a good investment on their part..... may as well get 97% of a lot as opposed to 100% of quite a bit less.

The WBC are the best, banning (and fining I believe) Arreola for swearing, then coming out and saying ''being sent to prison for hitting women is a minor indiscretion'' or something similar. Of course the man who generates them the most money was the one who apparently committed the ''minor offence''.
