The one that always surprised me how many title shots he got was Wayne McCullough

Rios was supposed to fight mitchell but he couldn't get a visa because of criminal record

John Ruiz for the longest time by the WBA. And a Wlad leftover in Tony Thompson seems to set on a rematch for another title shot against Wlad. Really, do I want to see another beatdown of journeymen?

The list quadruples if you don't count all the 22-7, 15-4, or 40-15 type journeymen that come-backing stars or titlists always take on.

The list also enlarges pretty heavy if you were to consider fights only at particular weights (ie: guys who fight at 122 but, when given the title chance, they make 118 where they were last beaten at).

Rios vacated it, but it was still very much at stake for Murray should he have won.

Another one which may come up soon:

Matthew Macklin if he fights Sergio. However, this is exactly like the Chisora/Helenius example where it was a ripoff and thus it is up to the fans to properly remember the details of each and every fight.

    What?

Thompson has won several fights since the late KO loss to Wlad.

Tony Thompson is no journeyman. Pretty sure he fits into the "fringe contender" category, slightly above journeyman. Ross Purity was a journeyman.

Pull the, "yeah, but back in the '70's..." bull**** in the classic forum. We don't care.

This. Golota was the first guy that came to mind. I'd imagine there'd be a couple more from the same time period when Don King was recycling his entire heavyweight stable in title fight after title fight.

Golota beat Byrd (draw isn't a horrible decision though) and definitely beat Ruiz. His were warranted.

I agree, had him beating both, was mad after the Ruiz decision. I even considered the Brewster fight being for the unified championship. Don King bought him those title shots though. He would not have gotten them otherwise and he jumped the queue to get them.

Here's a good article from back then

Joe Pesci: "If you lose, you win!
Why? Same as before, because there's nobody else. They gotta give you a title shot. Just stop eating, you fat ****."
