I'm old enough to have enjoyed the tail end of the Fab 4 and was lucky enough to have got into boxing around this time.I'm a huge fan of all four with Ray being my all time #1 with the others not far behind.
    BUT...
This is a very overrated fight(my opinion only, and I full appreciate many may disagree) for me.It has one superb round, and it stands up against many alleged classics, but my son has just got into watching old fights and when I showed him this one and told him it was many people's all time favourite,he was mightily underwhelmed.I showed him Barrera-Morales 1,and he said "now that's a great fight!"
I love that era,and I respect those 4 guys as much as anyone, but even though I can understand why people love that fight,it just doesn't hit the spot in the same way for me.For me it's the sort of fight a casual fan would adore, but we follow a subjective sport, and it's all about opinions.

What I like most is that they are two badass intimidating guys and they really tried to punch each others head off,the staredown and the way they come out after the first bell says it all basically.
    Unexpected all out war.

I personally think that even if Hearns had a bat he still wouldn't have been able to keep Hearns off him ..

I agree totally with your points, and when I was younger I loved the fight, but I just think it's magic has faded for me,maybe because I appreciate the finer points more than I did then, but like I said,I fully understand why people love it,it's just become a tad overrated for me and maybe only me.

As if Boxing hasn't been great? :huh, This was a great year for Hardcore Boxing fans, I can understand a casual fan saying Boxing is nothing like it used to be, but fighters who fight for legacy and go all out are are still out there to this day, people act as if Marquez vs Diaz 1, or Rios vs Antillon never happened, every year there's a least 2 or 3 Classic fights.

The most intense 3 rounds in boxing history.
What a fight. Who the hell comes out for round one in a superfight scenario and sets a pace like that???????:nut

Hagler and the Petronelli bros. planned it that way. They did'nt like Hagler's chances over the long haul against Hearns, and so the plan was for Hagler to come out guns blazing and set a blitzing type of a pace.

The plan was for a sizzling pace. The Petronelli's later conceded that it was a difficult decision for them to make to set that type of pace.
By design, Hagler set a pace to last him 6 rounds. Had Hagler not been sucessful and effective in getting to and hurting Hearns, he'd have been a spent fighter by round 6 having punched himself out.

Only fighters like Hagler with huge balls determine what plan it is that best gives him a chance to win, and puts it all on the line the way he did.

What a "Marvelous" night it was. I was in Highschool back then, and the fight was the hottest topic of conversation between guys for weeks after.

    Absolutely!

Bad decisions aside, what counts is what actually takes place inside the ring between combatants.

We should appreciate the efforts of the fighters and not let bad decisions damper our appreciation for the performance.:bbb:bbb:bbb

There are still lots of fighters today that lay it on the line and fight to entertain.
I think most of us do appreciate them.

Barrera vs Morales 1 surpasses that, Vasquez vs Marquez, and Corrales vs Castillo wars are on par, and many others imo.

Hagler v Hearns is definitely one of the best fights out there - but there are heaps of others that go unnoticed...only a certain few get hyped and usually end up ****.

Here's one of my favourites - Adrian Hernandez v Kompayak Porpramook for the WBC Light Flyweight title - you didn't hear a peep out of anybody about this fight.

Champion goes to another country to defend his title, no holding, no fouling, no **** judging and nobody backs away. Amazing.

    Let us be honest though:

It was Hearns' first fight at middleweight. Repeat: Hearns' first fight at middleweight. First above welter.

Nowadays, the win would be held in minimal significance and Hagler would be considered by almost everyone a ***** for even taking the fight. Afterall, that is how fans view similar accomplishments by contemporary fighters.
