Well, seeing as I've never heard of "Star bwoy", I'd be quite comfortable with favouring either.

The reason I think he might of continued to evolve as a fighter 1. His lifestyle. He wasn't a party animal or cokehead like was the trend with many fighters. Yes, he died in the early morning hours leaving his girlfriends house and on his way to training, but he wasn't known for excessive partying. 2. His fighting style. Yes he was known for an iron chin, but when he was counter punching he avoided unnecessary punishment. His clinics of Lopez and Gomez were proof of this. There were times like in the first round Sanchez went straight at Gomez opting to fight. 3. He was ALWAYS in superb condition. A testament to his dedication and discipline to the sport. I respect your opinion bro if you don't agree its cool, but Id have to highly disagree. Common sense just tells you at 23 you just getting started. And to peak at 23? I can understand maybe Morales at 29, but 23 no way. Maybe if he was a flyweight. There were no signs of wear and tear or even slowing down on Sanchez. He was smart wanted to be a doctor after boxing I think he had the capacity like a Leonard or Ali to win fights he probably wasn't supposed to. Very special fighter.

No, you're right. Not to mention Sal himself was looking to make his own exit within a year or two, so whether he had other interests, felt his body starting to crack or both, he probably doesn't hang around much longer.

I do believe he had enough gas to get up for a couple more legacy fights though and would've pulled them off. Then again, I'm not the person to necessarily be objective where that's concerned and I have no problem admitting it. Sal seemed to fight to the level of his competition at times, which is a valid critique. He didn't have the slightest clue what he was in for with Nelson and raised his game on the fly.

These things are all true, but one point I didn't touch on (which you later touched on) was that he was looking to quit boxing soon and go into working in medicine. He didn't want to wait until his boxing career had taken its toll. This was something on his radar just then.

My stance is that he'd have gotten out of there right around the time he felt he'd started to slip, which wouldn't have been for more than a couple more years, tops.

    Mike Tyson
    Wilfred Benitez
    Johnny Famechon
    Baby Arizmendi
    Tony Canzoneri
    Pipino Cuevas

All excellent to great fighters, all different styles, none of them Flyweights. All started their careers in their teens and hit their full stride in their late teens/early 20's. All of them were on the downslide by the late 20's if not much earlier.

There are plenty more examples where that came from. It's a whole lot easier to find examples of fighters who hit their stride early after early starts and subsequently blew their wad early, than it is to find fighters who hit their stride early and went on to success into their late 20's or early 30's.

Watch his title reign the whole way through. When did he show signs of improvement? I won't say he outright started to fade based on his troublesome latter performances. I happen to think the likes of Ford and Cowdell were just bad styles matchups for him, he excelled more against the come-forward types than he did the boxers/counter-punchers (except Nelson, incidentally, in his last fight:think). However, I think it's quite obvious when you watch through his reign that he wasn't making any real improvements. His better performances were in the earlier portion.

In order to see it as you do, you'd have to believe that he'd start to suddenly show these improvements against an even higher class of opponent like Pedroza, a more experienced Nelson, etc. in fights to come, and then after he was done with those he'd have hit his peak even later, having experienced no damaging wear and tear during that period.

Is that what you believe he'd have done? If so, I don't think I'm the one stretching it.

Sorry to harp on, it's just something I have a very strong opinion on and have thought about a lot. For what it's worth, salsanchezfan (probably the biggest Sanchez connoisseur in the Classic Forum, if the name wasn't a giveaway) happens to agree with me.

    Elchivito,
In your avatar, who is that black woman that Salvadore Sanchez has got his arm around?

    Is that his mother?

Are you somehow denying the fact that Azumah looked great and fought a fantastic fight against Chava?Just checking. And why didn't Azumah seek a rematch?
