WBO interim lightweight champion Ricky Burns (33-2, 9 KO’s) was reportedly chased by some thugs while on a run in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland on Monday. Instead of turning and trying to fight them, Burns turned and ran and was able to run fast enough to get away.

Burns then called the police, but they didn’t show up in time to catch the culprits. They reportedly threw cans and bottles at Burns while he was running from them.

Burns told the thescottishsun.co.uk “Out jogging and a group decide to shout abuse at you, chuck stuff and chase you. You phone police and report it and they just drive by 10 minutes later. It’s a joke. What’s Coatbridge coming to?”
Burns, 5’10” 135 lbs, isn’t exactly an imposing looking specimen even when he’s in tip top shape, so it’s not surprising that he was picked on by a group of kids.

What’s surprising is that they chose to throw stuff at Burns instead of confronting him and trying to beat him up. But Burns might have started running and that prevented the actual assault and resulted in the youths likely deciding to throw things. It’s a good thing that Burns didn’t stop and try to fight them, because he might have taken a beating.

Burns is scheduled to fight on March 10th in Glascow, Scotland against an opponent still to be determined. He recently beat Michael Katsidis by a 12 round unanimous decision in his last fight in November. Burns is hoping to get a fight against WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez or get the vacated title if Marquez decides not to defend the belt, which is what likely will happen.

Were they kids? How many of them were there? Was Burns scared or trying to do the right thing?

If it was 2 or 3 kids and he nails one of them, he can get done. Burns fists are lethal weapons.

Hatton gave up his watch to Asian thugs once.

Vernon Forrest and others would have gone down fighting.

Each to their own. We never know the full story.

TBF this isnt the hood in america where the gangsters would be carrying guns, its a scottish council estate and they were probably scrawny ****ers drinking white lightning and wearing burberry caps, but still not worth the trouble for burns.

If they've got knives and you try to engage a gang of them you aren't going to come out of it without at least a couple of slashes whoever you are. Chances are you'll be seriously wounded or possibly killed

    I'm glad he's okay

I was out running a few years back and I was jogging passed some local shops and some kid 18/19 come across the road and stopped me asking for cigarettes. I told him I didn't have any and he was joined by 4-5 of his mates and the rest of the 30 or do group started crossing the road, could sense that something was going to happen but it just so happened for personal reasons I had a non feather duster in my pocket - slipped it on in my pocket and said youth unsure what I was brandishing let me be on my way. There were loads of them but without trying to sound horrible I would have exploded his head all over the street before the rest got me or I legged it. Lucky boy.

Absolutely dangerous situation I wouldn't have liked to be at their mercy put it that way.

He's a sportsman, not a moron who gets into fights with gangs on the street.

  15. He'd have probably lost his boxing licence if he'd drilled one of them.
