Is It Fair to Call Boxers Pre '91 World Champs When ½ the Globe Couldn't Participate

Just askin'. By the way, don't interpret this thread as a race baiting thread, it's just a question that I came up with when I was bored. In fact, I don't know what the answer is. I lean towards "yes", these guys (mostly Americans) were true champs despite fighting basically among themselves in the US. Since the Soviet Union did not allow amateurs to go pro, it's likely the best boxers came from the US anyway as they had pro experience as opposed to amateur Soviets.
Then again, recent boxing development has undoubtly shown that Eastbloc boxers are for real and it's highly unlikely that top 100 ATG lists by boxing historians would consist of 97 Americans (as they do nowadays) had Communism not prevented the eastern part of the globe from boxing.

That said, I'm not blaming anyone or something. Americans could hardly prevent the Soviets for acting like they did. I'm just asking if you regard a world champion as such when he didn't have to face international adversary.

While they are much more competitive now, they where not competitive then.

As OP pointed out, they where not exactly dominating the amateurs.
I mean at least Cuba showed they have consistent legit world class competitors.

The eastern european fighters aren't a factor in 80 % of the weight classes today.

American and Mexican boxers hold something like 30 of the 64 belts. Nearly 50%. If we go by fighters from the America's its probably close to 70%


European fighters aint **** lol. Outside of the Klitscko's name some decent Eastern European fighters that are keeping the Hopkins, WArd's and Mayweathers away from the boxing elite lol./

Yes, but not in the way written in the poll answer. The sport is PROFESSIONAL boxing. Sure, the communist countries wouldn't let their fighters participate (and hell, the largest country in the world and the best amateur boxing country in the world STILL don't allow their fighters to go pro), but the champ is the champ, notwithstanding the circumstances. Just realize that while the sport was more popular back in the old days, the pool has also increased dramatically of late because of the opening of the Eastern bloc, which means the quality of the sport hasn't fallen nearly as much as some old timers would lead you to believe.

Anyway, it's sure as hell less misleading than, say, the World Series.

Yeah cuz there are a billion champs. Now name a Eastern Euro in more then a handful division that is actually making an impact.
