McEwan set to turn his back on USA

    BOXER Craig McEwan will end his ring campaign in the United States and return to Britain when his current promotional contract with Los Angeles-based Golden Boy promotions runs out in June.
    McEwan has lost his last two bouts in stoppage defeats, the first to Irishman Andy Lee in Connecticut and the second to Peter Quillin in Mexico, having won his first 18 paid fights in America.
    The former Clovenstone amateur star admitted: “Having lost twice back-to-back means I’m right back at square one in American boxing terms.
    “I have been offered an eight-round undercard bout on February 11 in Las Vegas which I will accept and train for at Freddie Roach’s Los Angeles gym. But I have come to the conclusion that when my contract with Golden Boy ends in June then I will be better returning to the UK.
    “I’m confident I could win a British title and have more meaningful fights but to do that I must come back home to Scotland and fight regularly in British rings.”
    Meanwhile, Edinburgh’s Celtic super-middleweight champion Kenny Anderson hasn’t given up hope of facing Londoner George Groves for his British title in Edinburgh.
    Rival promoter Frank ****** has made a purse bid to stage the Groves v Anderson title clash on London on March 3 but Anderson’s manager Steve Woods insisted today: “Frank ****** has intimated that he wants to put Groves v Anderson on in London on March 3 but we have been told by our promoters Matchroom that if Sky Sports back the Matchroom bid, then we will be in with a shout of winning the bid and seeing Kenny fight Groves for his British titl in Edinburgh

    Hope McEwan does well. Seems a decent bloke and there is some good fights for him in back in Britain.

    Domestic route is always best.

    Area, English, British, Commonwealth, European, eliminator then the world. If you come up stuck at any stage then you have credible and historical titles in your trophy cabinet.

    After 5 years, McEwan has nothing to show for it. Martin Murray came up stuck on the world stage but if it was to all end now he could proudly display his British and Commonwealth belts.

    McEwan is doing the right thing.

    On another note it is very important Frank wins that bid and continues to grow Groves as a BN fighter. Sky might stick it to Frank though.

    Well put though McEwan should be very proud and has showed real heart going over there and doing what he has. He's done more than Murray imo belts or no belts.

    The yanks have no system or competative architecture. They are often gifted an early NABF, USBA, intercontinental shot based on being 12-0 against bums and that gets them ranked relatively well.

    The system we have in the UK means that a guy gets recognised with credible belts and accolades at each stage.

    McEwan has done great but has nothing to show for it other than the opinions of the hardcore boxing fans. Martin Murray will show his gran kids those belts and the clue is in the title - British and Commonwealth middleweight champion.

    nah they split, & Craig went with his pal gary Young.

    Hopefully though bridges can be built, & Craig rejoins Nelson, the perfect trainer for him IMHO.

    I agree with you in principal, but the UK system has it's flaws too. Nick Blackwell was clearly overmatched going into the vacant British title fight with Murray, and it showed from the opening bell.
