I started a poll: http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=372083 Apparently, a Cotto vs. Pacquiao rematch wouldn't get a lot of support from ESB. I think it is pretty much based on what happened in their first fight. Well... Y'all are trippin, and here's why: The first fight was at a catchweight of 145 pounds. The second fight would end up at about 150 and would be for Cotto's 154 belt. Cotto is coming off of a great performance and a confidence builder in the Margarito fight. Even though 150 is a catchweight, that is an advantage for Cotto, he's the bigger guy and he's not cutting to 145 like last time. Cotto deserves the second chance. He has looked great in his last 3 fights, avenged the only other loss of his career and would show MUCH better in a rematch with Pacquiao. Pacquiao is fading. If Pacquiao wants the Cotto rematch, Cotto needs to jump on it. Despite what happened in the first fight, Cotto has a much better negotiating leg to stand on and would be in against a smaller opponent who is clearly on the back end of his career. Pacquiao and Cotto are two of the biggest PPV names in boxing. Of the "four options" Bob Arum has proposed, this rematch makes the most money, guaranteed. Especially if the fight is in New York at MSG. Cotto can win and he can win big. Now, a fourth Marquez fight would be OK... but we're just gonna get another close fight with more controversy. Marquez will likely get "robbed" again and nobody wants to see that. We've seen this fight 3 times already. Bradley? Us at ESB know that this would be a great and competitive fight. But us at ESB also know that nobody but us knows who the **** Bradley is. Would this fight sell well? Not nearly as well as Cotto or Marquez. Bradley still needs to build his name and he still needs to prove himself above 140 lbs. He needs more HBO exposure and he needs to quit ducking top fighters in his own division before being given the shot at Pacquiao. Peterson... We all know he deserves a big fight. But its the same situation as Bradley. Nobody knows who the guy is. Taking this fight would be a financial step backward for Pacquiao AND Arum. Not only that, but style-wise, I feel like Pacquiao vs. Peterson wouldn't even be all that entertaining. Give Cotto his due. Quit trippin.
All valid arguments. Not to mention Cotto is actually being trained this time. The only problem is the casual fan doesnt know all these details and expects the fight to go the same way, so it might not be as lucrative as you would think.
I would be very surprised if this fight doesn't happen. Too much money for it not to happen, and Cotto still has a good relationship with Arum.
I don't see this as a fight of interest. If Pac has 3 more fights, there are many fighters I would rather see him fight. An for Cotto, why not go after Margarito, Mayweather, Canelo, or even Chavez Jr.
Valid point but fight makes no sense from a legacy perspective for either guy. Cotto wins, it's because PAC was well past it. PAC wins, well who cares, he already did that. It's not like the first fight was close. From an old fashioned fight fan perspective, sure I'd watch.
