Peter Jackson would be the best fighter to practice during Sullivan's reign, apart perhaps for Corbett, who beat him of course.
Sullivan is a heavyweight. He has a heavyweight punch but I wouldn't favour him against either Louis or Ali. I do favour him to be capable of landing some good shots against both. It's not like John L would just show up to be hit and get killed. That's disrespecting the man.
I have a bottle of John L. Sullivan whiskey. I do not have any beverages with Louis or Ali as the mascot. Sullivan was well before both. Sullivan was greater.
but you forget, any fighter pre 1930 would be smoked by any 10 fight amateur boxer today, you know cause of 'advanced training techniques and nutrition'
He never once faced the coloured champion which is a black mark on his legacy in my opinion. Jackson's prime definitely coincided with sullivan's decline but what does that matter when john l was still claiming to be the champion of the world? For 4 years jackson was superior to john l and for 4 years he was denied a title shot. Did anyone else spend 4 years as number 1 contender during john's "reign"? I think not.
Do you know what actualy happened to Sullivan in his gloved fights? Everybody either fought to survive, or got anihilated! I am sure that he would have given Ali a better fight than you think.
prime is a bull**** term. post war and pre war ali both have their disadvantages and advantages. foreman and fraiser both would have koed a pre war ali, he just didnt have the chin to last the distance with fast footed sluggers. yes 1886 sullivan would have koed any version of a pre war ali. just as an fyi, sullivan punched unlike any modern day boxer. his punch actually turned around with his wrist rolled out so when he landed the back of his hand actually faced himself. this worked to cause his 2 largest knuckles to land squarely on the button, tip of the jaw, while the rest of his fist fully and firmly caught the rest of his opponets face. this is how, with gloves, he went around the USA knocking people out in less then 4 rounds. he was a professional ko artist.
