One more, and no power puncher these are how the reports appear in the paper archives!

    Syracuse Journal 11-5-06

    Police Gazette, below.

    JOHNSON FOULED JEANNETTE.
The announcement that Jack Johnson would meet
Joe J eannette at the National A. C , Philadelphia, on
Nov. 25, was the means of drawing a large crowd to
see the big fellows in action.

The bout lasted only two rounds, but was a hummer
from the tap of the gong, Jeannette having the l>est of
    the milling.

In the second round Joe opened up operations with
a left to the face, and Johnson missed a vicious right
uppercut. Johnson then swung his left to the body,
but Joe came back with left to the face and right to the
body'. Johnson put his left to the face, and Joe sent
several jabs to the face, which worried Johnson and he
rushed madly at Joe and swinging a wicked left it
landed low on the New Yorker, who dropped to the
floor, where he lay writhing in agony for some tune,
until he was carried to his dressing room

Jeanette said he was only 165 pounds when he last fought Johnson, so the paper report that he was 25 pounds lighter here makes sense. While the height in this report is obviously off, I do think your going to have to accept the fact that Johnson was not only worked over by a super middle weight novice in Jeanette, he in fact had a rough round one then fouled out!

Not exactly courage personified, as Johnson was heavier, and much more experienced. :)

You call me out and demand reports. Then they don't read as you hoped. The real fun part is when you attempt to spin things. I guess I'll have to read some of that tomorrow!

I suppose it depends if you really believe Jeanette put on 20lbs of solid muscle in a few months, maybe someone sent some steroids back in time for him

STILL WAITING ON A PRIMARY SOURCE.

YOU DO KNOW WHAT A PRIMARY SOURCE IS, I SUPPOSE?
    I'LL GIVE YOU AN EXPLANATION.
A RINGSIDE FIGHT REPORT IS A PRIMARY SOURCE.

FOR EXAMPLE THE REPORT OF THE PHILADELPHIA LEDGER IS A RINGSIDE REPORT.

THEREFORE ,IT IS A PRIMARY SOURCE. SIMPLE:patsch

I AM NOT AMERICAN BUT, LAST TIME I LOOKED SYRACUSE IS IN NY,
    NOT PHILADELPHIA.

THIS ACCOUNT IS THEREFORE, NOT A PRIMARY SOURCE.
    GOT IT?
YOU STILL HAVE TWO DAYS, GET BUSY.

The fight was given little attention by the local press. Several did not even bother to do a post-fight report. The Philadelphia Public Ledger said Johnson beat Jeannette, but lost via disqualification in the 2nd round. Johnson had been outclassing Jeannette for a round and a half, but then lost as the result of an “alleged foul.”

"Jeannette, after being thumped in lively fashion in the first round, assumed a crouching pose in the second round. He undertook to run in and clinch, ducking a vicious left-hand swing. Johnson ripped a right-hand hook up for Jeannette’s jaw. The latter dropped to the floor, writhing in apparent agony. He claimed to have been struck a foul blow.
He was removed to the dressing room and the club physician substantiated his claim. Johnson was promptly disqualified. Jeannette professed to be in great pain and lay in his dressing room in apparent agony. It is understood that the police proposed to keep Johnson, Jeannette and the club official under surveillance."

Apparently, there was some suspicion that there was something foul about the bout and its result. Clearly based on the words used by this writer, he suspected that Johnson had not fouled.

Contrary to the local paper, the non-local New York-based Police Gazette reported that it was an exciting bout from the start, but Jeannette had the best of it. In the 2nd round, Jeannette grew even more aggressive and they exchanged blows to the body and head. Joe landed several good jabs, and the worried Johnson “rushed madly at Joe and swinging a wicked left it landed low on the New Yorker, who dropped to the floor, where he lay writhing in agony for some time, until he was carried to his dressing room.” Johnson was disqualified.

Ultimately, the foul was regarded as an accident and the bout did not tarnish Johnson’s status as the world’s elite colored heavyweight. In fact, the bout did not garner a great deal of attention. Besides, Johnson and Jeannette would fight again a week later in another 6-round bout to settle matters, which the locals opined that Johnson had won clearly.

I'm now picturing Mcvey standing in the airport screaming "MENDOZA!!!" towards the ceiling as people get off a plane, ala the old McBain shorts in The Simpson.

I am happy to accept your posts as, impartial , unbiased, and objective.
I look forward to your biography on Johnson which I will buy.

The crux of the matter is, Johnson lost the fight on an alleged foul, that may ,or may not have been low, if it was , it was ONE low blow.
Johnson was in control of the fight at the time of the stoppage.
So in conclusion. Johnson did NOT foul out because he was in danger of losing ,[rather a stretch considering the fight had only gone one and a half rounds,].

If Johnson DID land a low blow, it was a solitary one, unintentional, and ,NOT multiple low blows.

I may very well have cut an incongruous figure, but incongruous or not, I was prepared to turn up and let events play out as they may.

I may not be pretty, but I still like to be able to look at myself in the mirror without being ashamed.
