Ali has beaten ATG fighters. So has George Foreman, Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis and Joe Loius. Exactly WHO has Wlad beaten?
Which one? I certainly don't remember anyone crowning Wlad as the "Univesally Recognized HW Champ" after Vitali retired. So again I ask, exactly WHO considered Wlad the true HW Champion after Vitali's retirement? Names please.
Wlad has done about as much with the division as he could have. He has dominated over a period, and taken on the toughest contenders that he could get into the ring. This is coming from sombody who is derisory in his assesment of every other belt holder of that perid. If I can't take credit from him, then history will surely apreciate him.
Ring Magazine, the organizations who recognize him as their champion. Various websites, most fans. Him and his brother have both been beating the top contenders of this era. You can either argue Wlad as champion(He's beaten more of them and hasn't had a significant, 4 year layoff), or you can argue none of them are(Wlad never usurped the vacant mantle while Vitali was gone, Vitali hasn't beaten the opponents recently to outrank his brother). A lot of people argue that Vitali deserves to be #1 at heavyweight because of Sanders. Vitali might be GREATER than his brother, but I refuse to rank based on fights that are a decade old. Wlad has done the better work in the last 4 or 5 years, and I don't find it particularly close.
What about the time when Toney was Vitali's number 1 contender and he chose to fight Danny Williams instead?
He's done all that can be asked of him really. I'd like to see him fight Vitali, but it can't really be held against him if he doesn't. The issue is he's never beaten an A level opponent, or even a B level guy in the grand scheme of things. All great Heavyweights have done that, even if it's just one. His top tier of opponents are Byrd, Chagaev, Haye, Sanders, and Peter. That's weak stuff. He's never beaten a guy even on the level of, say, Ken Norton, nevermind a genuinely great Heavyweight. That, coupled with the losses, is always going to raise question marks about him. Clearly, the most comparable great Heavyweight to Wlad is Holmes, who also ruled over a mostly mediocre group. Still, Holmes has the likes of Norton and Witherspoon to top his list. The rest of his names - guys like Shavers, Mercer, Cooney, Berbick, etc - are on par with Wlad's top opponents, but the important thing with Holmes is that he never lost until he was past it. Sure his opposition was average, but Holmes didn't faulter in his first 48 fights and 12 years as a pro. Wlad's fought an even weaker group and has been wrecked 3 separate times. Maybe he wasn't quite the finished article, but it's hard to call a world champion with over 40 professional fights green, and that's the stage he was at when he got run over by Sanders and outlasted by Brewster, two of the better names he's faced. Unless he rides out the next 5 years or so as he's been doing, utterly dominant, he's going to need an A or B level guy to elevate him to the top 10 I think. As it stands, the highest class of fighter we know Wlad can beat is the Chris Byrd/Ruslan Chagaev class, and we know he can be beaten by guys of that level if they have the right attributes (power, confidence). That's the main issue with Wlad's all time ranking, at least for me. He's yet to prove he can compete with the truly elite guys, and because he's picked up those horrible losses anyway, I refuse to give him the benefit of the doubt just yet.
Was never much of a Mayweather fan can I not recognize him as the top welterweight or the WBC welterweight champ?
Yeah when people say clean out it's from wlad's perspective over the last 5 years. Vitali is another kettle of fish who's basically settled for being second best. I'd like to see wlad beat pov, adamek and arreola to solidify his dominance of this era. If he wants another 3 years or so he has helenius, chisora, fury, pulev, boystov, dmitrenko to take on so there's plenty out there for him. How many defences has he made now? 11 is it? Well that's 9 names taking him to a perfect 20 and a dominance of 7 or 8 years. That's certainly top 5 material imo.
It doesn't matter who you think is better. Wlad's unifying and fighting better heavies with better rankings and has been doing it for longer and Vitali vacated his claim and never did one single thing to be considered over Wladimir since. Not one. You cannot argue Vitali is the man because he vacated his claim and didn't do anything to get it back but beating one of Wlad's leftovers with a belt. If anyone accepts a new lineage off of anything other than 1&2 squaring off, then we've got one guy who has beaten the WBA champion twice, unified WBA/WBO/IBF and Ring titles, all against different title-holders, two of which were undefeated and all three of which were undefeated as heavyweights, and then you've got Vitali, who did what to be considered THE champion again? Beat the same Sam Peter that Wlad UD'd. Where does he become anything other than a belt holder? I don't see it.
Dominate, but Vitali has been far more impressive with his run starting with his bout with Lewis, in which he would of won if not for the doctor.
