When i see the words "**** OFF" capitalised i envision that last right hand bomb Hearns landed on Duran. That was "**** OFF" epitomised!!!!!

The whole fight gives me the impression Hearns would have walked thru Duran

^^Wrong, clearly the brawl in montreal is a better indication of how Duran would do against Hearns than their actual fight in '84 :good

Of course it is, what good is an actual fight against the man himself when judging a fight against the man himself. No clues, stylistic hints or mental intricasies to be had there whatsoever

Frankly I dont think Tommy could have finished. he knew he had it, that's why he didnt protest. In fact, I think he was relieved. Dissapointed but relieved

Sugar showed good defense, kept his guard up high, didnt take too many chances, and tested Tommy's strength round by round. That's what smart fighters are supposed to do.

and... he was the physically STONGER of the two. any one else notice that?

It took 6 rounds of serious lateral movement and smart thinking for Leonard to eventually get inside Hearns' reach and hurt him. Leonard had the ability to move freely around the ring and constantly drift away from Hearns' punches, for the most part. He was taking a few jabs and was being tagged by right hands from Hearns before getting inside on him to have the alarm bells ringing. Duran quite simply doesn't have these attributes to put himself out of harms way against Hearns. Even the versison who fought Leonard in their first fight. Duran would need to come forward and 'have a go' with Hearns to stand any chance. Duran has no chance if he backed away from Hearns and tried to box. And I believe that Duran coming forward against Hearns spells, DOOM! It might be his best chance, but he'd still be there for Hearns' jab, hooks, and right hands. Hearns' height, reach and boxing ability proved to be very troublesome for a brilliant ring general like Leonard. And it would prove equally as tough for Duran.

    Hearns KO4.

I actually think Ray benefited from the big fight atmosphere in those early rounds.

Tommy was intent on boxing a tight, controlled fight. He was content to win rounds and land shots, but he never once tried to step in and do damage. Had he done so when he was so clearly in Ray's head and giving him problems, Leonard might have stayed on retreat.

As it was, for the most part, he boxed, and when he was unable to find a way around the jab, Leonard, realizing that Hearns had yet to really try to drop him with a big right, waded in(7th in particular) and just mugged him.

Tommy had all the tools, but Ray had everything else, including the boxing brain. Guy was a brilliant playmaker in there.

I had the exact same score: Hearns 125-121 Leonard. Leonard was dumb in that fight and almost gave it away. He just had more stamina and that got him through. I think he would have won the second fight if that went for 15 rounds as well.

Ray was all around quicker than Duran. At one moment Duran fans say Duran was too small for Hearns, and the other say he would jump all over him. Hearns would always land his right on Duran. It would be a matter of how many could Duran take.
