richard dunn 70's british heavyweight

i was born in the 70s so i wasn't really old enough to follow boxing then but for anyone that did, what were your opinions on the above named fighter. iv seen his box rec page & recently watched a couple of his fights (including vs ali) but for anyone watching back then, what were your thoughts on his boxing ability & career in general?

I'm afraid I can't help you Keith, but if it's any consolation; your avatar represents the first fight I remember watching.

 

Richard Dunn was in the Para’s. I knew a bloke who was with him in the para's and said that Dunn was as hard as nails, the strongest and toughest among them. Despite being found out at world level Richard was no mug. His best win as a pro was beating Roy "tiger" Williams, a very good and avoided 1970's fighter whom Larry Holmes always said would and should have been a world champion.

 

Dunn was a strong game southpaw whose chin was not of the highest calibre,he gave an honest effort against Ali,trying his very best.
The guy went out on his shield. unlike David Haye, in that travesty of a challenge to Wlad.

Not the best British heavyweight champion,but far from the worst.

 

Yes, you're right about that..he had guts all right. That chin of his was his worst enemy.

I would say that Dunn was better than John L Gardner and David Pierce,to name but two.


Obviously I consider Lennox to have been the best. Followed by

Farr
Bugner
Bruno
Cooper

 

iv watched that fight before, not exactly the best night of his career. the fight was for 3 titles & both boxers were fighting that fight on the back of a defeat to ali. dunn only had 1 more fight after that (another L) then hung them up.

you could go for either gordon ferris, mike holdon or frank goddard. Most other British champs would be competative at world level.

 

How about Jack Bodell? And yes, Lewis was by far the best..but Bodell was embarrassingly bad, especially when he was laid out by Quarry, who said when pressed, "well he fell awkwardly"
