I don't think it is a consensus. I think that the debate between louis and ali is pretty even and valid on both sides.

Maybe the only divisions with such debatable front men is lightweight and mw and they aren't split between 2 men, it's more like 3 or 4.

Popular concencus does not mean much, if you used that criteria, McDonalds would be the best restaurant on the planet and we know it isn't, Joe had more everything than most in the ring, for starters he could stop a man with a body blow an aspect of the sport completely unfamiliar to Ali, Ali, allowed himself at times to be a punching bag, Joe would never have adopted that position, Ali was a man of his time as was Joe, but please don't compare their skill sets.

You were the first to bring " robberies" into the equation, and now you're adding words like "prime"... Okay, we'll play it your way. What gifts did Ali receive in his "prime?".. If you're using the Doug Jones fight when he was green as grass, or anything post exhile, then you can disregard these fights as being "prime"

I don't have anything to back my claim, but I'd still be willing to bet that Ali is viewed by more people as being the best heavyweight.

This is not a very good comparison of how popular consensus works. Wide distribution of a cheap product has nothing to do with the majority's opinion of how great an individual was at something...

They were totally dissimilar to each other in every imaginable way... That much I'll agree with... But I think Ali's stamina, chin, speed, and ability to adapt in tough situations was all better than Louis's

Maybe he has a slight edge or maybe joe does. I'd be willing to bet that there is no global consensus as to who the best is.

You do kind off, at least as far as the forum goes, this is how Rummy's poll on the HW's made out:

The distance between Rocky and Louis is the biggest difference in one place, as it should be, but the second biggest difference is between Louis and Ali. The forum sees more daylight between these two great HW's ranekd next to each other than any others, outside of Louis and Marciano.

He also got more than double the votes for the #1 spot. That's a domination, as far as our forum goes.

Im talking about Ali and Louis.

And no Unforgiven, i agree with you on the Heavyweights getting sold short on P4P lists. I think you could easily fit 5 of them in a top 20 P4P list
