Its a nice list but I always have an issue with HW appearing in P4P lists, especially in the Top 5, but thats just me can you explain the love for Packy McFarland?
for me its the wins over britt welsh and draw with britton (although disputed the two rematches were also close) that really seal the deal, i think i might have put him a bit high, but i rate his achievements in a tough era, would be higher if hed convincingly beat britton and gibbons mind
and i used to eb the same with heavyweights, but then i thought it was unfair to penalise ali and louis just because they were heavyweight, their achievements and skills rank well p4p
A lot of these are interchangable within their brackets, 1-5, 6-20, 21-30, 31-50. There are quite a few that come close to breaking my top 50 as well, Roy Jones, Jimmy Wilde, Miguel Canto, Chang-Jung Koo, Kid Chocolate, Bob Foster, Jim Driscoll and a few more. Harry Greb Henry Armstrong Ray Robinson Ezzard Charles Sam Langford Roberto Duran Benny Leonard Muhammad Ali Barney Ross Bob Fitzsimmons Joe Louis Tony Canzoneri Archie Moore Mickey Walker Willie Pep Barbados Joe Walcott Jimmy McLarnin Ray Leonard Pernell Whitaker Joe Gans Gene Tunney Luis Manuel Rodriguez Terry McGovern Carlos Ortiz Ike Williams Kid Gavilan Alexis Arguello Jose Napoles Fighting Harada Eder Jofre Manny Pacquiao Marvin Hagler Carlos Monzon Emile Griffith Julio Cesar Chavez Jack Britton Mike Spinks Sandy Saddler George Dixon Ruben Olivares Thomas Hearns Packey McFarland Evander Holyfield Salvador Sanchez Dick Tiger Tommy Loughran Lennox Lewis Bernard Hopkins Young Corbett III
If I'm not wrong they both beat fighters ranging from 180-240 (maybe more for Louis with B.Baer and Carnera) so they proved their P4P credentials. It would be like not ranking Hagler, Monzon or Canto. These guys dominated their weight classes, which is just as valuable a plus point to dish out as fighting good guys over a number of weights.
Yeah, and I took McFarland out. Had him in the mid-20s before, but my knowledge of him up to this point, compared to the others in the list at least, can't see him place that high. I've seen him in one posters top ten, a very smart poster as well.
ye mcfarland was tricky for me to place, i dont really know that much about him and havent seen a lot of him, but i am impressed with what achieved on paper so used that as justification, after about 30 it became how many other fighters that i thought deserved to be there could i actually get in, i was pleasantly surpised with how the last 15-20 years did for representation in my list, thought i'd struggle to get any in bar sweet pea, but i think manny got a fair placing and got a couple more in with a few more on the verge, not a golden era but not as bad as i thought all things considered
