He had great one punch power. It compares favourably with any heavyweight ever.

I watched the quote from Walcott as he said it on talk show "The Way it Was." He was put on the spot being asked who hit harder ... Walcott tried to give a graceful response ... in addition he fought an older Louis , not the monster of 37 - 41 ...


I personally feel Louis hit as hard as anyone and I mean anyone. It's often over looked as he did so many other things terrific as well ... the way he decimates the Baer Brothers, Simon, Uz, Sharkey, Schmeling, Godoy .. it's just brutal.

If size equals greatness...then Primo Carnera is one of the best of all time...Louis was quick...very efficient...on target with his punches...and watch a prime Joe Louis...watch his feet...he is almost always in position to throw punches...he was a correct puncher...if he was fighting today?...he'd kick ass like he did in the late 1930's...

 

I'm not sure Louis hit as hard with 1 shot as guys like Marciano, Liston, Foreman or Shavers. But he threw punches that were so much faster and more precise that it made him the more effective puncher. Also his ability to put together fast and devastating combinations was worlds above any of those fighters

 

Just think of the needle Louis threaded to take out the super-tough Paolino Uzcudun, the George Chuval of his time...with just one shot...or that hellacious beating he put on Max Baer. I think Joe compares more than favorably with the best of them.

 

power = speed x mass. Louis has to be right up there imo.

 

Hope this is hyperbole, sir, but the sentiment is justified.

A man in the vicinity of 200 pounds can knock out anyone.

Joe Louis had a superior 1-punch, 10-count record to inferior clubbers such as "Big" George Foreman.

 

Again, Joe Louis was slightly bigger than Earnie Shavers, the guy who is universally regarded as the hardest puncher the sport has ever seen.

Size is not an issue here.

 

It was in that excellent series ."The Way It Was",Walcott said Louis was a top puncher and commented on his rythmn when punching,but said Marciano had better one punch power.
Personally I think both Joe and Rocky were all time punchers.
And Louis is possibly the most correct puncher I have seen ,certainly amongst the heavyweights.

Also, when we talk about hitting power, we have to consider that louis was a very good counter puncher and good at that controlled aggression that prompted an opponent to try to fight off Louis; and in consequence he often caught guys coming in; so in effect he was hitting them with some of there strength as well as his own.

Two cars head on at 50 mph collide with four times as much momentum as a car going 70 mph rear ending a car going at 20 mph.
