He might have been playing possum too.

Ali critics - looking for some examples of all this tiring and rope a dope pre exile, you know, his peak.

Of course any champ pre Ali would have held off Foreman and Frazier with punches. Easy feat that one.

    This is his latest comment,

Don't know what his agenda there is, but he seems to like taking prime versions of other fighters and sizing them up to performances that Ali had when outside of his prime...

As Robert DeNiro said in the movie Taxi, "are you talking to me " ?
Yes, i suppose Ali doing the rope-a dope, was past his peak...Years before he would have scooted away from Foreman . MM, I try to be fair, and have no "agenda" but the truth as I see it...Realizing that Ali of the Foreman fight was 32 years old,and his strategy of rope-a-dope paid off, but at a steep price... I have great admiration for Ali's courage in the ring, but I still pick Joe Louis of the Baer fight, over any version of Clay/Ali...Cheers...:patsch

Not true. While its true that ali took a few hard shots to the head. he didn't take anywhere near the 100's of blows that you claimed that he did. No one could take hundreds of shots from foreman and survive and besides that, it wouldn't take nearly that many punches from foreman to be knocked out.

Any punch from Foreman is going to hurt, whether on the arm, shoulder , forearm or sole of your foot, just as anyone who foght Marciano will attest to, whilst I never counted the uncontested punches that Foreman threw, they were far too many, Ali did what Ali wanted, he did not listen to anyone as Dundee will readily admit to, and sadly today is bearing obvious consequences.

rope-a-dope is more an indictment of Foreman than it is of Ali.

As Ali explained at the time, young Foreman was overrated. yes, awesome fighter if he manages to get his man out early (Frazier, Norton) but not a truly great fighter with skills and experience and maturity.

i was criticising rope a dope because we are comparing ali to louis, an incredibly high benchmark. Also i am not sure there ever was a prime ali due to the ban so I add before and after to reach a middle that should be his peak ability, and Zaire comes in the bracket for me.
Also i am a tactically minded guy so i probably put more importance on it than others do.

The only reason to consider him the best is "if he wins".

It's hard to know what else he should have done. Perhaps it is indicative of his inability to make real adjustments during fights though.

I don't think you can really take the remarks Ali makes before fights and hold them against his defeated opponents. He talked trash about everyone he expected to mount a real challenge. Many observers, including the two with the closes access to Ali in the run up to that fight, think that Ali was scared. Most of his team thought he was going to be beaten and so did 42/45 writers polled beforehand.

That's fine, as long as you don't see any boxing result as indicative of one fighter's superiority over the other.

Ali out-boxed, fought and thought Foreman then knocked him the **** out whilst he was in his prime. The equivalent would be Man U playing a full strength side at home against Crystal Palace, being outplayed in every area of the park and being hammered five-nil. It's as complete a victory as can be achieved in boxing, he showed himself Foreman's superior in every single way.

Foreman is a lock for the top 15 at HW.
