very true, the question is ali v louis. i don't want to under rate ali at all i just think joe was a better tactician and the rope a dope is an obvious example of a black mark on ali's side.

The rope-a-dope was the way Ali found to win one of the toughest fights of his career versus one of the most dangerous fighters on perhaps the best resume at HW. The tactics allowed him to beat this opponent and lift the world's HW title as a serious underdog. The tactics specifically allowed him to do this. Considering it a black mark is ludicrous.

He might have won differently, but how? Slugging it out in the centre of the ring hardly seems a good idea, and he's quite clear that he didn't have the legs to do 15 on his toes in that heat, or at all. He was trianing for something like the rope-a-dope as early as Liston for this reason.

What were his alternatives? Keep up the right-hand-lead approach?

if he moves then foreman follows him and gets just as tired, and head movement can be done in the middle of the ring as well as against the ropes.
I didn't know he trained with it before exile, interesting.
Put louis in zaire and i would say he goes down a few times but not seriously hurt and also ko's tired george.

Ali has stated Foreman cut the ring off too well and he wasn't going to have the energy needed to keep it up.

    No.

Foreman was younger and stalking is far, far more conservative than bouncing and moving. Ali was clear this strategy wasn't within his capability.

well he should have been prepared at the back of his mind to win the fight over the distance. the same as applies to every puncher. theres always that chance that the opponent will still be standing after 4 or 5 rounds. every fighter has to make adjustments, or be able to, if they are going to fight 15 rounds against the best quality opponents. Foreman didnt have the background experience of refinery in his style.
im not really talking about his strategy, im talking about his limitations.

I think Ali was kind of serious about Foreman being overrated. he was trying to get a serious point across in this case. for example, in his interview with Michael Parkinson a little while after.
anyway regardless of what Ali thought it is true that Foreman was crude and lacked rounds of quality boxing against quality opponents in real fights.

absolutely nothing wrong with expecting Foreman to win.
But he was no Joe louis or even sonny Liston that the press were believing in. he hadn't really been tested.
It was always questionable how he'd react if he got in a tough fight and didn't overpower Ali early. few could imagine Ali surviving long enough in a fit enough state to even raise those questions against Foreman.

    I'm sure he was.

This is the point, he didn't make the adjustments. But it's not so straightforwards as that.

Foreman was trained to pin Ali down. That was the hard part, that was what he was training for. To cut off the ring and pin him to the ropes. When he pinned him to the ropes, the plan was simple - destroy. THis is what the puncher does versus the boxer mover. The expected pattern of the fight as deduced by the royalty in Foreman's corner was that Ali would move, Foreman would pin him, Foreman would punch, Ali would move/clinch and they would begin again.

SO Foreman was sent out to do as much damage as possible at every intersection where Ali is pinned. That is, he did exactly what every puncher is sent out to do versus a boxer-mover. The important part to keep in mind here is that most people in the stadium thought Ali was being thrashed.

"You don't go to the ropes. The ropes are halfway house to the floor. He just looked like he had to cave in." - George Plimpton

It wasn't until around round 5 that people began to realise what was happening. At this point, Foreman had slowed down considerably, though whether this was a tactical adjustment or just tiredness is up for debate.

Certainly not - almost everybody did!

Foreman cut the ring off well, but not amazingly.
what does anyone else see happening if you put louis (at 30) in Zaire?
I still cannot get my head around rope a dope, and if he trained at it through his career it makes less sense to me than if it was specific to Zaire. Also it was his own fault that he didn't have the legs(getting banned and slacking at training). As noted above foreman had poor stamina himself, and there should be other ways to exploit it.

What career fights of prime Foreman would you present where he struggled to cut an opponent off that he wanted to?

What proof do you have that Ali slacked while training for Foreman therefore reducing his stamina?

Do you think excessive heat and humidity make a difference to a fighters stamina?
