I'm getting more and more excited as the seniors approach. Last year sprung quite a few surprises. 3 young first-time winners in Conlon, Ward and McDonagh....2 of these (ward + mcdonagh) had competed in the open youths in the previous month!! Then throw Adam Nolan and Ross Hickey into the mix - another 2 surprise victors! That's 5 of the 10 weight categories that we had very very interesting results in!

Who do we reckon might spring a surprise this year? Any young boxer competing in the open youths at the moment? We've heard a few ppl mention the very impressive Joe Fitzpatrick and Keith Flavin!! It's been proven that this age group are not too young to box - and win - at senior level! Rumours seem to be surfacing that Jason Quigley is goin for 69kg. Also heard somewhere that he is gonna try 81kg! Shall be interesting either way! Will Sean Turner have an impact at 91+kg? A lot of ppl seem to fancy Michael O'Reilly for 69! Will any of the intermediate champions do what Adam Nolan did last year and go on the win the Seniors a few months after?

Am looking forward to it myself,I would say the current crop of 52k lads Mick conlon and the rest have too much for young Fitzpatrick this year although he is def going to be champ one day and Flavin is only 16 so he cant enter,I fancy O Reilly at 69 although that and 64 are two very open groups.Cant see turner getting within an asses roar of Connie though would love to see him and mc monagle fight id say it would be a great tear up.All in all a lot to look forward to and of course the big one at 81k (we think)

I would have assumed the same about Fitzpatrick but he beat Ruairi Dalton quite convincingly in the Ulster Seniors. And I would have counted Dalton as one of the current crop of impressive 52kg lads. But I would say that Conlon is a bit too classy. I wouldn't be surprised if he wins them handy this year.
Ok i didnt realise Flavin was only 16. Pity, cos he seems to be hammering everything in front of him in the Open Youths (most of whom are probably a year older than him).
I agree 64 and 69 are both very open! I think Sean Turner cud cause an upset. He is probably in better shape now than most years because of training for the WSB. But then again, Con Sheehan is so solid! He probably wont allow Turner to get near him...like in the elite box-offs over the summer. Wat ya reckon Jason Quigley will do?

My picks for what there worth -

    49 Barnes
    52 Conlon
    56 Nevin
    60 Joyce
    64 Hickey
    69 McLoughlin
    75 Cummings
    81 Ward
    91 McCarthy
    91+ Sheehan

Think Cummings will cause the upset he was unlucky last year only losing to O'Neil 4-3 and the time keeper made a balls of it when Cummings was looking good for the win, he performed brillian in the Test event in London when he beat the Brazillian who has qualified for the Olympics and only lost to the current Russian European champ by a point or two .

I wonder if Tyrone McCullough will compete at 60KGs as Nevin has qualified for London already. If so i feel he really could be a good bet, he is a former euro bronze medalist and hold a win over DOJ at 57kgs in a box off as a 17 year old
