Ex-champ Sean Sherk aims for spring UFC return, wants to solidify HOF credentials

    http://mmajunkie.com/news/26896/ex-...-return-wants-to-solidify-hof-credentials.mma

Sean Sherk, UFC Hall of Famer?

With the UFC entering a new era and veterans such as Tito Ortiz, B.J. Penn and Rich Franklin in the homestretch of their careers, former UFC lightweight champ Sherk is hoping to cement his place in a crowded field of HOF candidates.

Inactive since a September 2010 win over Evan Dunham, the oft-injured Sherk (36-4-1 MMA, 8-4 UFC) now is planning for a spring or early-summer return to the octagon.

"I wanted to fight [in 2011]," Sherk told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio) on Monday. "But I had the same issues that held me out of the octagon for 18 months. It's just injuries. It's injuries piling up.

"I fought too many times in the last five or six years with serious injuries. I don't feel the need at this point to fight injured. When you're fighting and not 100 percent, it's not a fun thing. It's not something fun to go through. It's not fun going through training camp when you need surgery."

    HOF?!?!?!? Really?!?!?! :think

Massively forgot about him. Can't see him being relevant at 155. He'll be a good testing ground for fighters but can he beat Maynard, Henderson, Edgar even Pettis, Guida and Miller?

Melendez would tool him. Sherk's really lost a step.

I've been mostly a fan of Sean Sherk. But should a guy be putting his own hand up in the media for HOF inclusion? Also, Sherk was busted for Nandrolone use after the Franca fight, and that's not the sort of thing that should endear you for HOF selection.

Sherks been on gear his ENTIRE career. The one time he got busted was the one time he got caught. Dude is 5ft 6 and walking around at over 200lbs. Yeah right. Either way he's not HOF material.

True but he'd still be a step up in competition for Melendez.

At this stage I don't hink Sherk is a better fighter than Masvidal akthough I appreciate they have different styles. Zuffa need to bring Gilbert over soon, he's wasted in SF.

They should give him a striker , an out an out striker like Pettis , or Njokuani , even the Barboza / Etim winner

Still a very marketable fighter providing there's something left in the tank

    Seriously .......................

Based on what evidence , Masvidal is no more than a run of the mill average fighter in the UFC , and he got a title shot in SF :huh:yikes

Smash mouth style wrestlers like Sherk, Ortiz and others are like punchers in boxing. They start to lose a step at 30 and once their reflexes start to fade a bit they find themselves on the wrong side of too many exchanges. Unlike a puncher who always had a chance - the wrestler's ability to shoot with power often erodes due to injuries. Sherk was a monster in his prime especially considering the fact that he fought all over the world and in a division higher than his own against ATG fighters like GSP and Matt Hughes.

One fact no one has mentioned in this thread is that Sherk beat Nick Diaz who is currently set to fight for the interim title.
