No contest. Max had more skills, vastly superior durability, far greater mobility, and much better stamina. (Buddy's record in matches going the ten round distance was just 1-2.) Max showed a good hard jab against Schmeling, did a good job of neutralizing the German's counter right with his cross armed defense, and was more defensively elusive than is commonly stereotyped. Check out how he slips King Levinski's sucker punches in their exhibition (before wiping out the stupidly cocky Kingfish with his badly overlooked hook), the neat duck and counter overhand right out of the corner that nearly decks Galento, and the trap he baits for Comiskey, backing into a corner when suddenly dropping Pat with another monstrous right over the top. Carnera demonstrated the speed of Maxie's reverse gear.

Really, what Buddy had was a combination of size and power, nothing Max hadn't dealt with successfully in his career, having infinitely more experience. (Max-432 rounds of competition. Buddy-178 rounds.) I don't see how Buddy wins this in a legitimate showdown, and he only goes near the scheduled limit if Max lets him.

Max....he was better in everything......not a skilled fighter, but a much more dangerous opponent than Buddy......

Buddy might have had better fundamentals in some respects.

Even so, Max would win, and Buddy would not argue the point if he was in this discussion.

Exactly. Max and Buddy were really on two different levels of ability. Buddy was a decent contender, but Max was truly a champion - who, if he had any dedication to training, probably could have been a serious rival for Joe Louis in the early part of his reign. Not only was Max one of the hardest hitting HWs of all time, he had one the best chins.

Well, brothers don't usually fight each other..as exemplified by the Klitschos most notably, but there have been occasions where brothers had at it, as in the Quarry bros (not officially sanction matches, of course)...and Jerry was brutally unmerciful by all accounts I've read of. If Max and Buddy were of the same mind..of the Quarrys and not the Klitschkos...I think Max would utterly pulverize his brother..not taking anything away from Buddy, but Max would put him to sleep...take his head off..but that version of Maxie Baer was rarely seen..much to the relief of his opponents I'm sure.
