Anyone that hasn't read SI's 4 page story on Holmes - Witherspoon, pre, during and post. should give it 15 minutes of their life. Sensational story, including thorough coverage of the hotel fracas. It also has fascinating insights first into Slim Jim Robinson's (awesome trainer) tactics to combat Holmes and then into Futches for Larry after he snuck in and watched Witherspoon training. Super article. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1120871/1/index.htm
I still have the '83 issue of SI with photo's and post-fight blabber, etc.... They praised Spoon and ate up Holmes saying he was washed-up and all that ****... Holmes still edged Spoon by a hair in my book... 115-114 for Holmes is just and fair....... Again, Holmes told me in 1992 that he had a case of the shits just days before his fight with Spoon was a wee bit drained at 213 pounds for that fight... That came from the horse's mouth in Vegas...... MR.BILL
Larry had the shits for Witherspoon, he had the flu for Weaver, he took Snipes lightly etc, etc. He might be the heavyweight version of Roberto Duran except Duran's excuses came after losses, not wins. I'm going to have to rescore this fight. I've always had Holmes by a point or two or a draw at the extreme. He was a bit busier when he needed to be.
Spoon lost the fight when he failed to either drop or stop Holmes in round 9... Dundee at ringside was screaming left and right on how Holmes was out of it.... But Holmes stayed upright and was punching back... Holmes wanted to keep his WBC title...... Holmes by a hair over Spoon...:hat MR.BILL:hat
I also scored the good boxing Dokes based on his jab over Weaver that night too, but was happy with the draw. Weaver was indeed more serious and ready to rumble in the rematch with Dokes, but Weaver also did what Ken Norton did in 1976 against Ali; that being on the attack without punching enough.... MR.BILL
good article. interesting that they trained to take away holmes' jab and it worked with some sucess. but against pinklon thomas, witherspoon got his head jabbed off
Spoon fought Thomas in the summer of '84 looking totally ***** whipped to death and bored of boxing.... Spoon had no eye of the tiger for his first defense..... MR.BILL
Holmes who likely underestimated Witherpsoon, beat him on one of Witherpsoon's best nights. I have scored the fight twice, and Holmes wins by a round or two. I have a high opinion of Witherpoon and feel he was better that Page, or anyone else Holmes did not fight. In fact I think Witherpsoon is better than anyone Tyson beat, but that is a separate thread.
Had Spoon had his act together in Dec. 1986 and actually tried to beat Smith again in their rematch, I'm sure Spoon and Tyson would've fought somewhere between 1987 and 1989.... That loss caused Spoon about 3 yrs of his peak fighting career...... Peace... MR.BILL
