We were robbed of a prime vs prime fight because - like Manny / Floyd - the egos prevented it. And like Tyson / Lewis Manny vs Floyd will happen far far too late in both fighter's careers. Who was to blame here? P.S. Robin Givens doesn't count.
Tyson probaly had one of the shortest primes ever If he had good management & Cus didn't pass away before he became champ then it could have been one of the greatest reigns ever.
Don King. The machinations King went through to keep Tyson away from Lewis were incredible. Lewis was not a King fighter and was determined not to become one. I don't blame Tyson, personally, although I think he could have made the fight happen if he had really really wanted it. Very little blame lies with Lewis.
A prime vs. prime fight was impossible due to Lewis being an amateur and later an inexperienced pro in Tyson's peak/prime years. Later on, in 1996, Tyson's camp paid Lewis millions in court to take easy (or perceived easy) fights. Seldon was a soft touch for a belt, and a Don King fighter. Holyfield was viewed as a big name fighter who was damaged goods. Then the HBO/Showtime rivalry delayed it when the talk started up again in 1999/2000. It probably was a factor years before when Tyson's camp paid off Lewis in court to take other bouts.
The fact that you even mention liston with these guys is a joke. Liston wasn't 1/4 of the fighter of these two legends
Tyson went as far as to **** a women, and get sent to prison, just to avoid Lewis. Now THATS ducking! Really though, I dont think there was any real ducking going on. Things just didnt line up at the right time.
