Source? I have no problem believing that King wanted Lewis under his control, doing the old "I walked in with the champion, and no matter what, I'm walking out with the champion" bit, but I seriously doubt that King ever planned to have Tyson face top contenders. And even from your list, Moorer and Morrison were past their best and fairly safe by the time 96/97 rolled around.
people like to say that and maybe really think it but its kinda cliche at this point. and this is coming from one of his biggest fans. His choices probably wouldnt have been any different if cus was around. He was a good listener and respected alot of people when he was a kid..when you become a man, as well as heavyweight champ at the same time as well as a millionaire...youre gonna do what you want to do. cus died when before he won the title..he was only 20 when he won the title (3,4 months before he was still 19 which is amazing) then the next cliche people say "if kevin rooney was still there he wouldnt have lost to douglas and would have kept winning" Prob was...he fired rooney..because mike didnt want to hear he shouldnt be doin this or that and should be in the gym more or when he was training didnt want to hear anyone riding his ass like most trainers do and have always done to him thus helping. so he surrounded himself with his group of amateur trainers and support team and you know the rest.
Yeah, management has ****ed up many a fight and fighter's career by trying **** like that. For example, everyone knew that Bowe was set to fight Ray Mercer for his second defense. But rather than just signing the fight, they made it so that Mercer had a little show fight against Jesse Ferguson, and the winner got a shot at the title. Wouldn't you know, Ferguson won, and it made Bowe look like a chump who only made title defenses against jokes. Or how Tyson said that when he first came out of prison he was focused on boxing, he concentrated, but then he got a bunch of fights against guys like Peter McNeely and Buster Mathis, and the result was he went right back into thinking that he didn't have to work hard, that there was no point spending time preapring and training for fools like that. And look what happened afterward when he fought real fighters. Most promoters don't realize how easily it can all fall apart in the ring. Taking the easy way or just going for the $ often winds up coming around and biting fighters and their promoters in the ass.
Mercer and Moorer were tough outings, but come on Briggs and Morrison were nothing special. You didnt even know what you were getting with Mercer and Moorer.
The Tyson excuse train never gets old. Bottom line is Tyson ducked Lewis as well as many other fighters. Mike was just an American hype job.
Holmes Foreman Bowe Lewis Holyfield Were the biggest names during Tysons time. Tyson and Bowe refused to fight each other and Foreman was never a priority on Team Tysons plans You need keep off the crack
Shortly after Tyson was released from prison and King had resigned him, King was able to sign just about every heavyweight out there. He had all the title holders and contenders except Lewis. King could have kept Tyson busy for years in championship fights win or lose but Lewis had already established his spot as a mandatory challenger and would not cooperate with King. King did not care to protect Tyson he would have made the fight with Lewis after the Bruno fight if he had control of Lewis. Lewis just refused to sign with King or do any kind of series of fights with him. He wanted one fight with his side sharing in the revenues just like the scenario we are having now with Floyd and Manny only its Floyd vs Arum.
True, I knew what you mean, I was saying Mercer, Morrison, Moorer, and Briggs weren't so bad. but all four of them guys I wouldnt bet against one another.
The thread is on General somewhere, im not going to search for it, thats your job Outside Lewis, Holy, Bowe, who else was Tyson to fight then?
I remember thinking Holyfield was easy pickings for Tyson with him having been picked off by Bowe not long before that. The fight I wanted to see most was Bowe-Tyson as I thought them two were the top guys in the division. Bowe coming off the Jorge Luis Gonzalez massacre I thought he was unbeatable!
Its ironic that Tyson lost to Holyfield who lost to Bowe who got schooled by Golota who got KTFO by....Tyson
