    Well....good post......That´s probably a good reason for most of the fast fighters (70 from today).....isn´t it ???

    And like you said even then its not arguable for a superior athlete.....

    Pad work wasn´t used by old timers.......and almost every fighter today uses it....a lot actually....that and what MagnaNasakki said in his post are the only differences I can see...

    Is Pad work something that important in your opinion ??

    Earlier Bodhi had an excellent post that I agree with wholeheartedly. Boxing isn't a sport that you measure by how fast you can run or how high you can jump or how much weight you can lift etc. Boxing is about how well you can...well box. A fighter could implement all the modern conditioning methods and take all the nutritional supplements available but if he can't take a punch...or get out of the way of one then he's only going to go so far...explosiveness be damned. Weight training can be beneficial but it can also be time consuming. To be a good fighter an aspiring boxer needs to learn how to box. Boxing training in and of itself can get a fighter in great condition...If the fighter applies himself. Ali, Marciano, Louis, Johnson etc looked in damn good shape to me and they did it with "old fashioned" training methods as did Hagler and Leonard and it didn't seem to hinder them. Put these fighters in the ring today in thier respedtive primes and they would rule plain and simple. I think in some ways people try to "reinvent the wheel" when it comes to getting in shape for boxing. I think techniques have improved when it comes to boxing...hands up, elbows in, use of the jab etc..but the conditioning methods used by the ATG's were every bit as good if not better than thier modern counterparts.

    It is important. But it's being used to replace sparring and fighting to bring about sharpness. It is not as good. Sparring is proven to be bad for your brain. Modern fighter fight less and spar less - they need the padwork.

    If you mean Tyson then you are just proving my point since Mike was trained by relatively known old school trainers (Cus and Kevin) using old school training.

    Never saw it at Stillmans, vjB. Didn't seem to hurt the biggest collection of HOFers in the world.

    pad work has the benefits noted previously but surely more sparring in training = a better boxer in most cases.

    as with running, shoes have improved and they arnt running on wood chips any more.
