When he did get touched he got knocked out ... Jones had no chin ... he never had one and he wasn't fighting any dope fighters. He was overwhelming in a weak division. Sorta like Kostya Tszyu ... he's a great fighter but he was not as dope as people think he was. His best victories was over B-Hop and James Toney ... he didn't beat Tarver (IMO) in any fight.
The light heavyweight division sucked !!

Outside of Toney and Hopkins ... who can we really say he beat?

First off those 2 wins trump anything Joe has done and two both guys are hall of famers ..We got over 5 pages on a thread about Joe Calzaghe and resume ..Are you going to tell me his resume was deeper than Jones ? Not even close ! You say weak division but Jones beat every contedner from top to bottom meaning he cleaned out the division! Give me one divisions above 147 in the 90's that was a hot division excluding heavy weight?? You can't !

And he beat Tarver in their first fight after coming back down from Heavy watch the fight again and you want to question what he's done ?? Jones' didn't get KOed until 15 yrs after turning pro and yet you want to knock his chin ? Did you just start to watch boxing in 2000 ?? Look at the punchers he's faced ..He fought Tarver 3 times and was Koed once yet you want to still question his chin ? Funny ! It was bound to happen Jones always fought much bigger guys .

Joe beat Hopkins in the middle of some of his best wins. Jones beat Hopkins when Hopkins was still not fully developed as a fighter.

Umm Calzaghe beat Jones and Hopkins heads up !! Both were coming off big wins and both thought they could beat Calzaghe. Jones had me convinced that he was going to win but there's no doubt in my mind that no form of Jones or Hopkins can beat Calzaghe. All of the great super middleweights ... Benn, Ray Leonard, Hagler ... said that Calzaghe is a great fighter and probably the best super middleweight ever.

Great wins ... Kessler (3x champion, undefeated at the time), Jones (hall of famer), Hopkins (Hall of famer), Eubanks (hall of famer), Jeff Lacy (undefeated champion at the time) ... Hopkins just beat Pavlik, Jones, Pascal, and Tarver who were all at the top of their game. He lost to Calzaghe !!

    Great point !!

He had beat Winky, Pavlik, Tarver, Loss to Calzghe, beat Jones, drew with Pascal, and beat Pascal ... that's a helluva run.
Thats 2x world lineal champion with a 5-1-1 (1NC vs Dawson) record in his last 8 fights.

They are both merely magazines, but I believe the comparison ends there. The Ring is an industry giant and is called the bible of boxing. For better or for worse, alot of people put alot of stock into what they have to say. Including the fighters.

I didn't feel anything HAD to happen, I said I didn't see a problem with it. Same way I don't necessarily see a problem with Froch being dropped due to the loss. Although, I don't think they should considering Kessler's inactivity.

So where are you getting the rankings and the amount of top 10 ranked guys that he fought at the time?

I can't seem to find the monthly rankings. I don't believe that Ashira, Mkertchyan or Veit were top 10 ranked at smw by The Ring at any point(could definitely be wrong though.) I'd like to find out for sure about the others.

It was watched a little more if that's what you're saying. But aside from that it went relatively unnoticed. Not much stock is put it in here.

All of which means what? I don't get it, they were good wins.

How does a comparison to Froch enter in? I notice you say more accomplished smw as opposed to better fighters. Either way, I think I'd take Froch over either.

I'm not comparing Ward to Calzaghe if that is the point. Ward isn't there yet.

I really don't much stock in the alphabet orgs, they are a tolerated evil in my opinion. The fighters though, they target those belts.

And you're right, it is the fight that matters. Ward and Bute are already established names. My point is Ward or Bute wouldn't pursue the fictional ESB belt. It wouldn't have the same industrial clout or prestige as the other, more relevant belts.

They would drop the division again if/when Ward moves on, but Ward isn't exactly a widely recognized guy outside of boxing fans. Veit would go unnoticed because he basically fought no one until he fought Calzaghe.

Groves and Degale are good prospects from what I've seen. We'll see what they do. Their fighting is a good thing in my eyes. It's the way it should be. Screw all this building up their records by fighting overmatched competition. It's good to see good young fighters locking horns in the ring.

As for Veit, he has lots of wins, but against who?

Absolutely. I guess you can use that as evidence to how relatively thin the
division has been over the years. Can you imagine the outcry if the current champs were to line up a defense like that? Do you know if they were mandatories?
