Tims is a good solid fighter, was a good amateur and won a few Irish titles as an amateur, Should be a decent fight and Tims can pull the win off imo . Heres a clip of one of his fights - [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVKZ1hxvjso&feature=related[/ame]
I agree, I watched Stephen for years, he lost in an Ulster middleweight final to Brian Magee, licked his wounds then came back the next year to KO the reigning Ulster and Irish light-heavyweight champion Mark Delaney, he was fantastic that night:yep. He could box, punch, had bags of heart and hands the size of shovels, but one criticism of him was he was inclined at times to make it hard for himself by going toe-to-toe with lesser skilled opponents. I worked in Harland and Wolff for several years arround the time when Kirk was boxing, he was a maintenance fitter there. He would have come in out of the pipe-shop where I worked, sometimes his face was black and blue after a hard contest. He's a quiet bloke by nature, but I heard of him knocking out three goons in Belfast city-center on a night out, the goons were talking when they should have been listening:yep. Kirker would have made a great pro but had to retire due to a abnormality in a routine brain scan, Stephen now trains the Cairn Lodge club. At long last he has an opponent and it's Anwar Alfadi. There are guys on here who know more about him than me, but I can tell you he is strong, can box a bit and will be coming to win. I think his parents are Irish [slappie can find out for sure:hey], so we can claim a part of him. I think given longer to prepare for this fight, he could have finished Williams off earlier.
Michael Carruth and Darren O'Neill are guests on iTalksport tomorrow morning (Sunday). It starts at 11.30am on Setanta Ireland.
Thanks Ardy. Some interesting stories there...especially about the 3 goons Was he well beaten by Magee in that MW final, just out of curiosity? And what height was he? My guess is at least 6 foot 2
I stand around 6ft, and he looked much bigger and broader than myself, I'd say around 6ft 2 or 3 would be correct. Now I'm thinking about it again, it might have been Danny Ryan of the Raphoe club that beat Kirk in the middleweight final I was mentioning earlier. My aul memory is going. I posted some of the videos you mentioned, beautiful straight right, and left hook, but he at times stood in there too long wanting to exchange but I suppose that's what made him so exciting to watch. When he won the bronze medal at the worlds, we [in the pipeshop in H&W] were all tuning in to every radio news report to see how he was faring up to his defeat. On another note a lot of praise should be given to Eamonn McAuley for his work in you tube. He's searching the archives, and obtaining video recordings from boxers of contests that would otherwise be lost for good. Eamon says he has more to come as well. He is also going to do a video interview with Kirk and Sinclair for Boxing-Ireland.com
