Found it - that was Mantequilla:

I've read that even against Carmona he was past prime but it's the best available footage of Gato.

He looks good in that one.

Just read that post and it's an interesting observation i'll look into.

I just assumed he was a bs title holder because of the bs way in which ken lost the wbc strap.

DeJesus was a very good, solid fighter, but I'm not convinced that he was an ATG or even a genuine great at all, despite his big win over Duran. IMO, his win over Duran is more indicative of the fact that Duran was simply not the "invincible" force in and around LW that many today would have us believe. Duran reigned over a fairly so-so LW era, and IMO, if he had been champion in a deeper and more high quality era as Leonard, Williams, Ortiz, and most of the other of the ATG LWs did, it might not have been uncommon at all to see him drop a decision here and there.

Oh don't get me wrong, it's a great victory. No doubt.

You probably will like it if you like Napoles.

I don't think that's quite as trivial a point as you make it out to be. I think the weight was an advantage for DeJesus - Duran still almost a natural jr. LW at that time (he weighed only 132 for Buchanan, and looked chunky weighing 137 against DeJesus), whereas DeJesus was natural bigger at that time and more comfortable fighting up near 140 pounds.

Still, DeJesus' win was very impressive, for the reasons TAC602 said.

It was a full 3 pounds above the weight limit and usually that's enough for me to dismiss the significance within that division.

However a combination of the low blow, the defeat and what I believe to be a better 1973 are enough for me consider de jesus above duran for those 13 months.

as a man duran respected enough to embrace, out of love and admiration, despite being affected by AIDs and the public hysteria surrounding the disease

Would be far less significant today. With the uncertainty and fear regarding the disease at the time, it was a pretty phenomenal gesture.

Yes it's a very time specific gesture.

very true. but for the time, what a classy and respectful move. that, and going out for the second round of the hearns fight the way he did, make me a duran fan for life. he was the definition of courage, machismo and man
