Arum Says Pacquiao Has Chosen His Next Foe, But Won’t Say Who It Is - Whispers Suggest It’s Cotto

    16.01.2012

By James Slater: According to promoter Bon Arum, in speaking to The Philippine Star, it took “30 minutes to get everything done.” Arum was referring to his star fighter Manny Pacquiao and he choosing the next opponent for the P-4-P king.

But, being tight-lipped, Arum will not say who it is that Pac-Man chose. Not until an official press conference set for this coming week some time. Why not? Is it because Arum knows the fans will be unhappy because the chosen next foe is not Floyd Mayweather? Maybe. But Arum has said that Mayweather “is not out of the picture.”

All Arum would say was that “Yes, he [Manny] has made the right choice.” Again, why the need for secrecy then?

It may not mean too much, but whispers coming out of The Philippines say that Pacquiao’s wife, Jinkee, was quoted as saying her husband has chosen Miguel Cotto as his next opponent, meaning, if true, that we will see a return of the November 2009 meeting Pac-Man and Cotto had. How will fans react if this proves to be true? Pacquiao against a guy he has already dominated and stopped, anyone? And at what weight will the reigning WBA 154-pound champ face Pacquiao at if a return happens?

Jinkee said her husband had been going though tapes and, in looking for a June opponent, picked Cotto.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Pacquiao did fight Cotto next; or anyone else other than Mayweather come to that. A recent ESPN poll had a whopping 46-percent of voters saying they did not believe Pacquiao-Mayweather would happen this year. I’m one of these people.

Look for Mayweather to fight on his set date of May 5th (probably against Canelo Alvarez), and look for Pacquiao to fight four to six weeks later (probably against Cotto).

Now, let Arum and Pacquiao prove me wrong!

It's definitely Cotto. May and Pac will never happen unless one of them loses, only then will one of them soften up at the negotiation table.

MANILA, Philippines -- Filipino boxing icon Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao has not made a decision regarding his next boxing opponent, the boxer's adviser, Michael Koncz, said Monday.
This is contrary to reports that Pacquiao had already chosen his next opponent, although his promoter, Top Rank chief executive officer Bob Arum, has remained tight-lipped about it.
"We have not made a decision," Koncz said in an interview with Boxing Scene's Ronnie Nathanielsz. "We are not rushing."
Arum was in the Philippines last week to present Pacquiao with four choices: Juan Manuel Marquez, Miguel Cotto, Lamont Peterson, or Timothy Bradley, Jr.
But last Wednesday, unbeaten American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. fired off a series of tweets challenging Pacquiao to a much-awaited mega-fight on May 5.
Pacquiao's camp responded that they prefer to fight at the end of May for "economic reasons."
Pacquiao's wife, Jinkee, was also quoted as saying that the boxer wants to fight Cotto for the second time.
But Koncz clarified her statement, saying, "(Manny) liked the idea of Cotto. She (Jinkee) didn't say we were doing Cotto. That's the difference."
Arum agreed with Koncz, telling Boxing Scene that "(t)here's no real hurry."
"Everything is proceeding, everything is going well. There have been developments and we'll have to see where everything is going," Arum added

When there's a decision, they'll announce it obviously. Everything else is just rumor / speculation.

So Grander why are Team Pacquiao inconsistant, either he has made the decision or he hasn't I get the feeling (personally) that they are lying to attempt to save face.

Can you give me your explaination?

Why would they lie? If they picked Cotto, its going to be announced eventually anyway. Not like they can hide from that.

It'll be announced when it's announced, this is all just speculatation right now. I hope they choose Bradley but I dunno if Arum wants to feed him to Pacquiao right away.

Seriously when Mayweather comes out of jail they better not act like they want to fight him again because its a blatant duck

Because the tides have turned in the Mayweather P.R war. Many people have accused Pacquiao of ducking now - see Atlas, Kellerman, Fat Dan etc etc.

Ok so if they are not lying why is Bob Arum quoted as saying he has chosen?

Who sshould I believe out of Arum / Koncz?

What about all of Floyd's blatant ducks. Did you have anything to say about that?

And why can't Floyd just agree to a later date in May, if taht's all that holding up the fight. What's the big deal?
