Calzaghe was the betting favourite. Most pundits tipped him too. The thought was that Eubank was a spent force, although he proved in the fight itself that he wasn't.

 

Let's not forget, Eubank clearly lost 11 out of 12 rounds against Collins in the rematch (looking awful in the process) before retiring and that was years previous.

Eubank was past peak, he was not shot. Or else he would not have been able to give Thompson a run for his money. Weight drained? Sure, he had to boil down very fast, but it was not an unhealthy weight for his body. And he was not mentally gone. Or old.

 

Eubank with a healthy knee and southpaw sparring would've stopped Calzaghe. No question. Instead Eubank was a stationary slapper that night, instead of a ring-generalling snapper as he was in his prime.

He took the Calzaghe fight on a few days notice and hadn't been able to do roadwork due to this knee problem.

 

Boxing News actually picked Eubank to stop Calzaghe in 10.
