Just wondering what my fellow ESBers feel about the Mar. 23rd fight between James Kirkland vs Carlos Molina.

Both are even as far as height and reach ( 5' 9" with 70" reach ), but I would say James is the stronger of the two while Molina might have the better skillset. I know Molinas record is a bit misleading being that some of those losses where in close fights where many feel he got shafted ( Chavez jr. and Alvarado ).

Kirkland is coming off a huge victory, one in which many were predicting his oblideration, against El Perro Angulo. That's got to have him coming into this bout very confident. Molina gots some decent wins against Cintron and Conyers, not to forget a draw against the very technicaly gifted Lara.

How do the you guys see this one going? I'm still on the fence, so I was hoping someone could weigh-in and bring up other points or intangibles. I think it's a good match up. :bbb

I think it's a great match-up. Both of these guys are exciting and great for the sport in entirely different ways. A win over either at this moment in time is a very good one.

I think Kirkland is too relentless for Molina, who thrived and was at his best against passive fighters in Lara and Cintron. I don't believe Molina has the pop to drop him and he may have to resort to pot shots whenever he can squeeze them in against the non-stop pace of Kirkland. Another thing to consider: I know it was a flash knockdown, but Conyers did send Molina to the canvas early in their Friday Night Fights clash.

That said, I can more than see a scenario where Molina does win via KO. It would happen early if Kirkland truly does have a legendarily shaky chin. Most likely though, Molina would catch him late after Kirkland has gassed some. Molina will certainly have more in the tank as the fight progresses than Angulo did after Angulo burned himself out and never recovered and we don't quite know if Kirkland can keep up his insane output for a full 10 or 12.

What do you think of that?
What do you think of the fight?
Do you know if it is 10 or 12 rounds?

I'm really excited about this one. Molina doesn't throw bombs like Angulo, but he's got as good a chin and much better skills to survive with. I think Kirkland is still being wrote off as questionable from the Ishida fight, big mistake.

That's the second time today where I read someone write about Kirkland gassing later in his fights. I have the total opposite impression with Kirkland. The longer your in the ring with that guy the worst off you are. He trains for long haul, his fight with Duran showed he got stronger as the fight went later.

I agree with you. I think the best way to beat Kirkland is to go for broke and try to get him out quick (not based solely on the Ishida fight).

I'm just saying that he has only gone past round 2 once since his prison stint, and against Angulo, the fight only made it to round 6. There's a big difference between 6 and 12, or even 6 and 10.

Kirkland stomps Molinas ass out while Canelo continues to run and duck

GBP will keep on feeding the "tough" opponents to Kirkland while Canelo will get the easy ones. i.e. Angulo and now Molina. Expect Kirkland to fight Lara or Williams next if he gets past Molina while Canelo will problaby fight some bum.

You bring up some good points there Smoak, and I do believe it's a 12 rounder but not sure.

Like you said, we still need to see if Kirkland can keep his insane pace going till the late rounds. I don't think Molina has the power to put down Kirkland unless he truely does have a shakey chin.

Molina's chin is very good. Yeah, I remember when Conyers dropped him, like you said it was more of a flash ko, and Molina didn't look hurt at all from what I remember.

This one can go either way man. I can see James getting a TKO or Molina pulling out a close UD. It's going to come down to who is better prepared fighter. Lets see how their training camps go.

Kirkland has a punchers chance but because he's such a bug puncher that's a pretty big chance. If Molina makes it to the cards, he should win

My prediction is Molina UD or Kirkland very controversial UD with all the ESB proclaiming him a glass jawed fraud afterwards

that's a good observation my friend. I can see them match him with Lara if he wins somehow
