Going to attempt to FINALLY start amateur boxing on Jan. 31

    I'm going to a very reputable gym with one of the best trainers in the country, and it only costs $48 for the YEAR!

    I know I posted a video here ****ing around "shadowboxing", bu I'm actually going to join a gym now, like I've wanted to do for 4 years.

    Current weight: Around 240 pounds

    I know I'll probably be the biggest one there, but I'm trying to get in shape and lose A LOT of weight (like 65 pounds to fight at light heavy).

    Wish me luck brahs :good

    Oh, and what should I expect?

    Nice one!

    I wouldn't bother setting yourself a target weight just yet. Just see how it goes and how you feel. When I was 18 and a half stone, I never thought I'd be fighting at Welterweight!

    First expect to work on your form practicing all your punches, then to move onto doing some bag work while maintaining proper form. I wouldnt expect to begin sparring for atleast a few weeks.

    Yeah, I wasn't expecting to spar, considering it's a pretty good gym, and I'm assuming they train you first.

    Dam, heavier than me...I thought I was like the biggest one, cause most guys I see are like 165ish.

    How long did it take you to get in good shape/lose extra weight?

    Took me about a year to get from that to what I am now (stone over welterweight limit). Although I've managed to enjoy myself from time to time, holidays etc, which undoubtedly slowed the process down :lol:.

    Did you lose a lot of muscle? That's my biggest concern. I want to lose fat and GAIN muscle.

    Yeah, I wasn't 18 and a half stone of pure blubber.

    I wouldn't worry about it too much to be honest. Just train hard and you'll see everything come together. It's hard to really tell how things will go at this stage :good.

    Boxing itself will not make you gain muscle, its a cardio based sport which means you would lose abit of both. However boxing uses alot of the key muscles by itself e.g shoulders, back, core and legs. Boxing training + the circuits and conditioning drills they do SHOULD (not an expert) keep muscle lose at a minimum

    Well, obviously I'm going to continue to powerlift, because I realize it's a cardio sport.

    But "keeping muscle loss to a minimum" is not good enough for me, I want to GAIN muscle. This is how I like to live my life:

    Are you training to be a good boxer or to aid aesthetics?

    Aesthetics are obviously a plus, but they are irrelevant in sports.

    Strength =/= aesthetics

    Is it so bad that I want to be in shape, fast, AND strong? If people can't see how strength would aid you in becoming a better boxer, I have no hope left in this world. There are obviously benefits of being strong. Why should I NOT try and gain muscle while cutting down weight?

    gaining muscle and losing fat at the same time is impossible. cut the weight than worry about muscle gains
