He is responsible for shattering & burying the media projection, public perception of the pug boxer/fighter stereotype & his persona re-invented boxing global for the modern era. I was not a big fan of his but he is without dought the GREATEST sportman to ever walk the planet. He is a TITAN:deal
Stopped off at a bar on the way home from work this evening to gun down a few. Some media coverage of Ali came up on one of the TV sets. He really looks horrible these days.
Yes,it's heartbreaking to see how ill Muhammad looks, but it shows his mental strength. Still making public appearances in his current condition is,in it's own way, just as incredible as anything he accomplished in the ring.
great article and great video. I've just watched that with a great big smile on my face. Don't seem to get the same affinity for todays boys.
I feel exactly the same,ALF. There's nobody out there today who grabs the emotions like Muhammad and the boys from our past. Mayweather and Pacquaio are very good fighters, but that's as far as it goes.
Nah you got it spot on mate:yep It was an era of dominant REAL WORLD CHAMPIONS!!! & CONTENDERS:deal Not the paper HBO titleists that abound today, every ****er got a belt these days & if some HBO prospect has'nt then they'll fit-em up with an IBO/WBF belt & call-em a world champion.
A few months back I read The Fight by Norman Mailer, and that book made it seem like at that time the whole world *was* really watching. Even if we get the big fight that everyone is talking about in May, or now November, I don't think the whole world will be watching. (It'd be great if that weren't the case!)
The best fought the best & they did it with more pride & less money, they didn`t behave like schoolgirl drama queens.
Ali made a career out of defying expectations, and did so again despite the fact that many observers thought he wouldn't be able to reach 70 years of age after being diagnosed with Parkinson's. That's something that makes me very happy to see. :good Happy Belated Birthday to the Greatest. Here's hoping he continues to defy expectations for many more years to come.
The finest fighter I've ever seen at heavyweight. Just made boxing his *****. Took his unique gifts, molded them into a unique style, and rang up one of the better resume's in the sport, winning countless fights against countless greats, enduring hate, scorn, and pressure along the way. The greatest man? No. A sporting hero, icon, and the greatest heavyweight ever? Yes. The definitive champion in boxing history? Absolutely.
