say what you want about the guy and about what hes like outside the ring, but inside the ring the guy was technically brilliant. From his beautiful stiff jab to his speedy combinations and body work. In his prime the guys footwork was superior to most also. I dont know, i was just watching some fights of his because I forgot how great of a boxer he actually was and man was he good.
To be honest with you I always found his style pretty ugly, but no doubt he was a brilliant fighter on his day and would give anyone a hard fight from 130 to 154
He's under-rated these days, and it's a shame really. He bought alot of positive media attention to Boxing and ALOT of new fans, myself included.
I agree to all the comments thus far. Let's not forget, he had a very solid chin and great heart. Abd he would pretty much fight anyone.
yea agreed with everyone also. solid chin, only knocked out once with a body shot from bhop and stopped another time by manny pacquiao. I agree about his tyle being kind of ugly also. I didnt like it for a hwile because i thought it was too herky jerky and borderline robotic but in some fights he does seem so flluid. I guess he seemed robotic but when he let go of his combos they came out very fluid
nice I was just interested to see peoples take on him. all the newbie boxing fans, which we as older boxing fans can appreciate newbies, tend to either be "*****s" or "*******s" that were turned onto the sport by either the former or the latter. therefore i think the only real oscar they know is the one that lost to both. im happy to see there are fans out there who remember the prime oscar. it lets me know that you probably remember a prime ike quartey and shane mosley and trinidad and pernell etc... you guys now what i mean the youngins dont know any of those names.
Looked great when he had the right opponents. Not so great when his opponents chose to box him. I was a big fan, first boxer I followed, besides Tyson. Never missed his fights. He was both underrated and overrated by his supporters and many haters. There are less haters today so he isn't underrated as much. Still gets overrated, fans acting like he was this unbeatable monster, mostly by foolish haters of other fighters who love to prop him up over them despite his record vs the greatest fighters he fought proving otherwise. Despise him now as the bull**** spewing promoter.
Very good boxer ..Great speed mean left ,fought anyone ,come on how can you not appreciate a prime DLH ?
Was a great fighter for sure. Very technical when he had to. I always find this sparring clip hilarious yet amazing on how fast he used to be. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ee9QvlEu_3g[/ame]
De La Hoya beat the crap out of Void, only to be robbed by a split decision. He knocked Void's head back over and over again!
:good Brought in a lot of women fans Iron chin with good power Diverse enough to box or brawl As mentioned but it needs to be said again, the guy fought anyone.
I rate him a very good fighter, but far from a great boxer. His boxing imo was vastly overrated. When I rate boxing ability I think to myself, how good a boxer would he be with just average speed and quickness? .....and with DLH I come out thinking Par with the course, far from great. DLH looked spectacular against smaller fighters who were slower and he could overwhelm by the physical part of the game. Against fighters who were very good and his size, Quartey, Trinidad, Mosley, he competed but could never take it over the top imo to beat anyone of them. I'd rate DLH a very good to great fighter, but not a great boxer.
