Going to attempt to FINALLY start amateur boxing on Jan. 31

    sometimes being strong isnt enough. Sure you can have all the power you need but it means nothing in boxing when you cant land a clean shot [most likely a powershot for the noobies]

    three or four rounds of not connecting = :oops:

    explosive punching comes from speed or acceleration or however these esbers want to correct me. Punching technique will get you 100 times further than pounding a heavy bag to exhaustion [bad habits formed that way...we've all been there right?]

    Agreed that technique and speed and explosion, but I'm just trying to improve all of those AND strength. I want to be the best ALL-AROUND boxer I can be.

    I definitely know it's not all about strength, but I want to be able to throw both the fastest AND hardest punch.

    Strength in the gym as in how much you left etc is not what makes you hit harder in the ring.

    But you CAN gain explosion and power from strength training. I understand it doesn't matter how much you bench, squat, deadlift, etc., but lifts like power cleans and push press, I'm guessing, could significantly help you in the ring, because they develop explosive power.

    Just as another note as the thought popped into my head, the motivation you have at the moment for weightlifting may well turn into motivation for getting insane cardio after you spar for the first time. You do not yet realise how horrible it is to be exhausted and have your arms feel like lead after like a minute into sparring and you, much like myself, probably have too much pride to ask for a breather or to stop. That's what really motivated to step my cardio training up for sure.

    I already do have that motivation for cardio, always have, but it died down a bit after all my knee injuries. Now that I'm starting to get serious about boxing, I've tried the up the cardio A LOT by jump roping more and shooting around the basketball (and chasing it, and running down the court doing fastbreaks, etc...I'm doing it at a high-intensity level).

    And yes, I do have too much pride to ask for a breather, because that's how my coaches always taught me when I was a kid.

    Built like a badass is not aimed at athletes, particularly not boxers.

    They do. But correct me if im wrong but these are lifts that devop strength without devoloping muscle mass as much yes?

    Yeah. I don't give a **** about mass, I want strength. I know muscle =/= strength, but when I refer to muscle, I actually mean strength. I know it's wrong, but it's a habit. Kinda like how in baseball I call Dice-K "da-sook-a".

    I'm enjoying your enthusiasm for the future, but isn't the speed/power/strength discussion all a bit of a moot point until about 50lbs from now?

    If your 65lbs from your target weight you really do have more important priorities in front of you, than how strong will I be when I get there.

    Why not talk about how to get there?

    Well, getting there isn't a problem at all, I mean, I've switched positions so many times in football that I've learned how to lose/gain a lot of weight.

    I just gotta work my ass off in the gym, do lots of conditioning, and watch my calorie intake versus how many calories I burned.

    Buy a good headgear to sparring! my doctor has just told me to take at least a 1 year break from boxing because my of nose damage.

    I'm saying I'm not looking to GAIN mass...it seems some people got the impression that I like to bodybuild or something, and I just wanted to make it clear that I'm not just trying to go for aesthetics, I'm trying to lose weight while getting stronger, that's all.
