He's running for Mayor of Kiev for a third time.

It would be bitter sweet. He is a fringe great of sorts for all of his records and stats, but the big wins are just still, to this day, not really there.

I would love to see him leave with health, wealth, and a great prospect for life after boxing. But I would rather have seen him do the same after finding some legacy cementing fight.

Hopefully not before Haye. I would love for him to get to Povetkin before his bro too. Besides them there is no-one else for him to fight

I wish Vitali would forget about politics and focus on boxing this year.

Vitali has to be fair, achieved everything he can with the current crop.

the only thing he can hope for is that if he keeps bashing up contenders eventually one day one of them can become a great long after he has retired.

he hasnt had a defining victory because there are no fighters good enough to deliver him one

You mean apart from Lennox Lewis?

Vitali was lucky, he actually had a shot at an ATG heavyweight and got his chance at a defining victory. He just came up short, but gave a decent account of himself.

Regardless, the murky nature of the finish, the fact it was on short notice and the fact it was his ONLY shot means he doesnt have much luck.

Imagine it would be like Lewis never getting a world class opponent after Holyfield 1, he'd have every right to feel hard done by, right

Yeah, but consider all the fighters who don't get one of those fights at all. At least we've seen him in the ring with Lewis, and that can only work in his favour.

It may not have ended as most would have like, but he got his chance in the ring against a very highly regarded fighter and showed he could more than hang with him. Regardless of the outcome, people still cite what they saw in those 6 rounds as evidence of his 'greatness'.

Then you look at Wlad for example, he has dominated in recent years, barely losing a round - but when people try to talk about his ATG ranking it's based on purely hypothetical head to head matches and can (perhaps quite rightly) be shot down with his 3 embarrassing losses. He's never had that great victory that makes those losses redundant.

Yes, he might not have been as lucky as getting a fully scheduled shot against a 100% prime ATG, but having that TKO loss to Lewis in those circumstances on his record does far more for Vitali's resume than an infinite number of wins over average Joe challengers would. It proves that he was the real deal, whereas for a lot of fighters it's just speculation and a lot of question marks.
